Need advice: Barrel M. wants dummy round for 284 win build 168gr Berger

Hi Guys,

Looking some advice on my 284 Win build. I've told my barrel manufacturer that I want to shoot 168 grain Bergers. His reamer has .315" neck, but 0.0" FB.

He is recommending that I provide him a dummy round to properly set the throat with this bullet.

That's fine, however, I'm trying to determine exactly where I should set the bullet in the case. My options (I guess).

1) I have another 284 win match barrel that has a .220" FB. Set the bullet in the brass to provide a 0.0" touching the lands with this configuration.

2) Set the bullet in the case where the boat tail transition lines up at the neck to throat location

Looking for any feedback from the experts! thanks

just buy a throating reamer too and set it wherever you want. You can always cut a little more off. Putting it back on, not so easy.

Oh, your saying that this throat reamer can be done DIY ? interesting

I don't DIY mine, Tim pushed it out based on a dummy if I feel I need more freebore. Having a separate throater gives you options and they are only about $75. We have started short throating reamers and using a throater to final cut for the bullet chosen for that barrel.

.150 FB only with custom reamer, right? No way to make dummy round.

Unless I try and get cute and seat bullet to 0.0" Ogive w/ .220" FB barrel and re-seat by (.220-.150). hmm
What length action , long I hope . If not and you want it to feed make sure it fits your mag
