Need a new bolt for a factory Rem 700 SA

I have a factory barreled Remington 700 SPS action that I need a replacement bolt for. Long story short, I bought this rifle new and have since salvaged away most of it for parts. The factory barrel has a low round count, and is a good shooting barrel so I'd like to put it back in service. I've tried a couple of new to me factory 700 bolts, but the headspace was too much after checking them with a no go gage. What would be a cost effective way for me to get it shooting again? I hate to continue to try factory bolts until I get lucky and find one that headspaces properly.

Thanks,

Kevin

What did you do with the original bolt?

I sold the bolt because i was originally going to part the rifle out. I'll most likely buy a replacement from PT&G and have it headspaced properly. I honestly didn't think that a factory .308 chamber from gun to gun would have that much variance, and that i could find one that would work safely within reason.

I see---another learning experience--I've had a lot of them.

You might find a bolt on ebay and with a little patience might be able to snag one at a fair price. It will, in most likely hood, still need to be re-qualified by a smith................You still have the old firing pin and such?...................if not, you might be better off selling the stripped action and buying another 700. They will be on sale somewhere for Christmas and Remington is sure to offer their slow but sure rebates.

Gary how can you say such a thing. We head spaced one of my mausers from all the bolts you had laying on the bench. Well there was about 20 of them so maybe you are right.

If you sell that action-- keep the barrel since you like it and buy one of the $310 ones from cabelas. Have your old barrel headspaced to it later. You'd have to be able to get at least 100 out of that action so you'd have around 200 in the rifle. I don't think you could get a new factory bolt for less than that.

This and the reply from Riesel are a good idea. Thank you both for suggesting it. I think I've seen factory Rem 700 SA bolts go for around $150 or so, and a custom bolt from PT&G could go well over $200.
