Need a custom savage nut - any leads?

Hello. I'm in need of a custom small shank savage barrel nut. What I need is it threaded normal inside. Some way to tighten. Either a standard wrench or flats. But. I also need it threaded on the outside too, for maybe a inch or so. So also slightly longer than a regular nut. What I'm trying to do is be able to threaded a section of threaded aluminum over the nut. Kind of like a ar15 handguard

Any folks out there making savage barrel nuts? Figure it would be fairly simple for someone already tooled up for the nuts. I can supply a pic of what I'm thinking of too

Thanks

Brownells has barrel thread protectors , made of aluminum . I've used these , threaded outside for a modified ar free float tube . I personally didn't like it , but ir works . I used a pin wrench to torque barrel nut .
The part is about $20
Good luck , gary
Please pm if any questions

Interesting Idea. I was going to do something similar by making a custom recoil lug that had out side threads. If you cant find one, give me a call and I'll make you one. Also look at rockwestcomposites.com they have carbon fiber tube that you could epoxy a threaded insert into, would look cool ;)

So here are a couple images of what I'm thinking. The whole goal of this project is to be able to mount a forward rail. But I want it connected and secured to the action itself, not just attached to the stock like some systems.

So really I'm looking at a savage or remage barrel nut (still sourcing the action) that is also threaded on the outside. Then an aluminum tube would be threaded to it, a short section, something like 7-inches. and a rail attached. I would mount the rail after everything is tightened down and headspaced

You could bore a piece out that fits on the barrel like a recoil lug with a shoulder inside and threaded on the outside to fit the free float tubes on the market. That way you dont have to halfass it with a barrel nut. Dont know if thats what alex meant or not. Think of it slipping over a barrel shank and stopping like a lug but go over the outside of the barrel with the big threads on the outside

Ya, you are talking to a guy that does not own a lathe, really wish I did, and had the skills to use it, LOL

I'll need to get it made. I also don't mind the nut system, it will also allow me to change barrels and take advantage of the pre-threaded barrels.

So, focusing just on the nut, not the whole thing. I believe this is workable. Nut would be about 2.5-inches long. Face that would shoulder into the nut about .25-inches. the front would be cut down to allow a tube of some sort to be glued on. If the tube is slightly proud, no biggie, just want it to shoulder so I can maintain access to the pin hole which would allow the use of a pin wrench to tighten.

Alex - sent you a pm

I did. But I'm back at how do I get it threaded? But I guess as long as I find something that matches the OD....back to the glue on. And its only 20 bucks or so to try one out.

Do you think its and issue the fact that its aluminum?

I know it would be less expensive if you just need to thread the outside .
I've done one for an axis , 223 , using an old free float tube . Customer liked it , I didn't , but it worked . No the Aluminum will not hurt a thing as being the barrel nut . I personally have a few of these on 1.25" barrels .
