need 6x47l sizing help

uqagh.jpg

I size the neck with a fl bushing die and get the every time. Is this the doughnut? It shaves some of the brass off when I run it down. I can't seem to get the full neck into the die. But it does chamber in my rifle. Any help is appiciated.

I got the same thing and when I determined I needed, and bought, a .001 larger in diameter bushing it stopped. I was thinking it was a burr or chamfer issue on the bushing but did not pursue when the next size larger didn't do it. I lubed lightly with Imperial, checked for obvious burrs but nothing helped or was found. This bushing even did it after the initial neck down operation. I felt your pain and will be following this thread!

Sorry, not a doughnut! That occurs on the inside of the case neck were the neck meets the shoulder. You can see it and when bad a bullet will not pass it on a fired case. This is a good reason to keep the bullet base above this area by throating accordingly.

Sounds like you're over sizing your brass at the neck. What is loaded cartridge neck diam.? What is fired neck diam.? What is sized neck diam.? You want your bushing about .001" to .002" smaller than loaded neck diam. If your chamber neck is on the large side you may have to reduce neck in two steps. So, all the above measurements are important. In my case(pardon the pun) I modified a 6.5X55 swe LCD to 6.5X47L, works like a charm giving me .001" neck tension.

Josh, Lotsa stuff to consider here. Have you reversed the bushing in the die? Also Mr. Majestic's answer might prove beneficial yielding .001" neck tension. Have you measured the fired case neck to see if it has a taper? (possibley a chamber issue?) What is the fired case neck diameter?

You will never get all the neck sized in a bushing die, you need a full length die to do that.
What your seeing is not a problem, and your OK if it chambers with out a lot of pressure closing the bolt..

I haven't shot it yet so I don't know the fired case neck diameter. I use a fl bushing die if that matters. I use the same die with a bigger bushing to size a6.5x47 lapua die and it sizes all the way down but it is a rcbs bushing. For my 6x47 die I use redding die and redding bushing. Maybe I should order a rcbs .269 bushing?

Josh, I don't use bushing dies to avoid these types of issues. If Preacher feels your bright spot & shaving brass is normal I'm in no position to question his conclusion. I'd take his advice at least for the 1st reloading then see if shaving & bright spot continue. If so, go with the next larger bushing. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than I can comment on the interchangeability of the RCBS & Redding bushings. Someone is bound to provide input.

interesting problem .i mistakenly put the bushing in upside down with my forster bump die and that caused shaving on the neck. where the redding type s neck die never showed this issue.
i purchased the redding die as i couldn't get consistently straight necks with the bump die but found it no better.
now i use a standard full length 6x47l forster sizer that has been a pleasure to use and get straight and consistent resizing every time.
forster have seemed to have gotten there neck dimension about perfect for unturned necks as expanding the neck is very minimal with the fl die.

if i remember correctly (have not used those dies for some time)
redding- numbers facing up
forster have there size printed on the side which orientates the chamthering to the bottom

the inner edge of my redding bushings are beveled (?chamfered) on both ends and work either way. i get occasional little streaks and have inspected the bushings with magnification and can see no defects. i suspect the streaks are coming from very tiney irregularities in the brass at the case's mouth. i think i'm seeing less streaks if i deburr the outerr rim more carefully.

Seems to me the numbers formed on the bushings would upset metal enough to cause a problem, so I keep my numbers facing down...
If the bushing are not kept squeaky clean they will pick up brass of the edge of the necks, and that will cause streaks on the case neck..

Well, I got to break in the barrel today. My brass measures .273 in a fired case. There is hardly any sign of the step now. You can hardly see it, but you can still feel it if you run your finger over it. But you guys think I should get a bigger bushing? Maybe like a .270 or .269?

My shoulder of the cases jumped put .005. Is this normal? I think I might have jammed my bullet in the lands a little too much.

Now I am tring to set up my fl die to bump back .003, but everytime I get it set up for the piece of brass, I use another one the same length and it sizes way too much. I'm not real experienced with fl die as you can tell. Anyone have advice?
