Neco Concentricity Gage Issue

I just used my Neco Concentricity Gage for some new measurements which involve using the step cone, in this case, for .223" dia, .223 Remington and .22 Hornet. I notice that the sized case mouths are a loose fit on the step cone more so with the Hornet. Is this typical? I can see two possible solutions. One being that this is typical and that you have to hold the case neck down on the indicator when measuring, and two, I could turn my own custom sized step cone. Should I need to do this? Any thoughts or personal observation?

Yes, I saw the same thing.

For the instances where I run into this, I just make sure the indicator is aligned well with the top and I spin the brass with a touch of pressure to keep it preloaded in that spot. I had no problem reading the results this way.

Even running the internal anvil, you must learn to keep the pressure and spinning balanced such that the two point contact is maintained.

Long ago, good quality brass was much harder to come by, so I use to have to use the NECO gage a lot more than nowadays. Even when I turned a dedicated pilot for 22 or 30, I found this condition because you can't predict the condition of those neck diameters on unprocessed brass. Once they were sized, that custom pilot was perfect.
