necking up cartridges

I have 6.5mm Grendel dies and brass and 6X47 Swiss Match dies and brass. I want to take some of the extra brass and a set of extra dies in both calibers and neck them both up to .30 caliber.

Problem is, I don't know the first thing about how to go about doing this. Is there a custom die service that can do all the number crunching and produce the necessary chamber reamers, die reamers and reloading dies for me? I don't have much in the way of spare time and have more money than brains, believe me, that ain't saying much!) and was hoping someone out there specializes in this sort of thing.

Thanks!

I have done what you are looking at with necking up the brass, and it does not take a smith to do it. I simply ran a LUBED 6.5mm expander mandrel into teh 6mm case, then a LUBED 7mm expander mandrel into the now 6.5mm case, and then a LUBED 30 cal expander mandrel into the 7mm case. Fairly slow process, but it worked without incident.

Now as to the dies, that is a totally different issue. That will take a smith with the reamer that you want to use, or buying new,or custom) dies. The smith I am using on my long-throat .284 had me to send a dummy round with the specific bullet and seating depth that I wanted and then he did the measuring and interfacing with the reamer company. There are several custom die manufacturers that will take your dummy rounds and make custom dies for you for seating and for sizing, making the sizing dies requires fired cases from your rifle, that is a bit tough when the rifle has not yet been built).

I would neck up the cartridge, and then work up some dummy rounds. At that point you can either send them directly to the reamer producer for a reamer, or ship them to a smith and let that smith do the leg work. Assuming your new cartridege is not a readily available cartridge, when you would simply buy new dies), you can also send the dummy rounds to a custom die manufacturer for new dies.

Sinclair's can get you the expander set-up you will need. Go with Neil Jones for your die needs, he will put you right.

Found the Sinclair Expander Body and Mandrels. Picked up a set to go from 6mm to .30 caliber. I'll try to post results as I get them.

Many thanks for all the tips and help!

Why you want to use Neil Jones for your loading dies. Neil saves a bunch of money and gives you back the perfect size die. You send him three fired cases from your chamber, fired three times each) Cost for the die is 175.00. If you have a resize reamer made and then have a die made from a resize reamer it will cost you a lot more than what Neil charges.

I see you have posted the same question on Benchrest central dot com. Go back to that site and you will find Neil's advertisement. Click on it and it will take you to his web site. Call Neil and tell him what you are doing and then follow his advice. It is the same as I have given you. Let him take care of your problem, that's what he does.
