Necking up 6.5mm to 7mm via fireforming- dumb idea?

I have a pile of 6.5-284 cases I need to neck up to straight 284. That's a 0.5mm or 20 thou (inch) diameter increase, and likewise a 60 thou increase in circumferential length. Is there a way to do this with one fireforming pop? ie If I were to fireform the 6.5x284 brass in my 284 chamber with my 'in stock' shotgun powder/ tissue per established practice, are there any benefits/ risks/ criticalities to that choice? Would immediate annealing be recommended after forming? Note that I do not have fireforming experience at this time. Trying to chart the waters safely.

1st, I don't know what the dimensional differences are between the 6.5-284 and the straight 284 Win....so that being said........

If... the ONLY difference is the neck diameter..if the both cases have the SAME HEADSPACE dimension, just simply neck up, load, and shoot.

If.... the headspace dimensions on the 6.5 -284 is LONGER than that of the 284, simply neck up to 284 and bump the shoulder back to fit the chamber, and shoot. Watch your trim Length.

If.... the headspace on the strait 284 is LONGER than the 6.5, then you need to first neck up, and if it were me, I would make a false shoulder to headspace off of and shoot full house loads. Neck up first to 284, and then to 30cal, and back down to 284 just far enough to be able to chamber the round.....load and fire the case to blow the sholder forward. Just like the dasher process that lots of us use.

My bet is that the headspace is the same...just neck up and shoot....if i am wrong, someone will surly point it out.

Good luck, and have fun,

Tod

My 284 brass all says 6.5x284 Lapua. It was all popped out. If it is x times fired, I would anneal it before firing it.

Thanks for the replies.

I do understand that an expander is the usual way to go. Unfortunately, I don't have one handy, however, I have lots of shotgun powder I don't use. My pondering is whether I can use the powder to 'expand' the necks a la fireforming instead of going through the hassle of waiting on an expander.

...is fireforming what you mean by 'popped' Larryh?

A expander won't cost you very much, doing what your purposing will still causes throat erosion , barrels are much more expensive then expanders. You asked for advise, Tod, Larry & Preacher gave you sound advise. If you insist on not purchasing a expander you can get by using your full length 284 sizing die with a tapered button. Be sure to lube the inside of your case necks and go slow as your apt to collasps a few neck. If this brass has been fired you'd be much better off annealing it first.

I understand the info, and appreciate the feedback. Was no less curious about whether there was another established method of skinning the cat out there. An expander should be in the mail shortly for the application. Another few bucks in the race to the bottom ;)
