Necking down .308 Lapua cases to .260

Hi Guys, Thanks for letting me participate in such a great website

I'm wanting to neck down .308 Lapua cases for a .260 Rem
how can i make this work?
reason being is I don't want doughnuts from .243 brass and they are $35 more expensive than .308 here in Australia
will i just get different problems with .308 brass?

I will be using redding competition dies

It goes much smoother, and you will end up with a more uniform case if you run them through a 7-08 full length die first.

Then run them through the 260 full length die and that's it.

When going from 308 - 260 in one step, you will have a large bulge on the shoulder of the case. Going through a 7-08 die first does away with this.

When necking down, the only problem you might encounter is excessively thick necks, which you might have to turn depending on your chamber.

I have to second BHarveys' comments. I'll be doing the same procedure soon for my .260 A.I.....but I have to do the same sort of operation for my .25-06. I neck that from .30-06 to 270 and then to .25. Neck thickness is a reality...and if you don't check them / neck turn....it's pretty easy to have pressure sign when working up loads and be at low powder charge levels....my learning experience anyway.

I think if you follow the steps outlined and probably turn your necks...you'll be fine.

Stay safe,

Wayne

HI GUYS,

would help to know who i'm talking to, but---.

had the sane problem about a 1 1/2 year ago, but with some "palma head stamp" 308 brass.

spoke to redding and was advised that given the brass had been fired, about anything i did would result in 'bumps' on the shoulders.

they recommended a FULL LENGTH CARBIDE die in 260 and just go for it. i did this and if you use a smooth but forceful stroke on the press, you get a nice resized pc of brass.

while useing this brass "fire forming" i set 2 national f-class records - 500 yd [20 shot] 200-13, and 1000 yd fullbore - [15 shot] 147-4. i never touched the brass beyound resizing!

if you are resizing 'new' brass, you might want to 'step' resize.

Would it be acceptable to run them through a 7mm-08 neck sizer before the full-length .260 die? Or, does the step-down die need to be a full-length die?

The neck sizing die doesn't support the case body, and the required force could mis-align the neck with the body. If you have a run-out gauge, try it and see what your results are. Things all the same, I would prefer a full-length die.
