Neck up or necking down........

Getting back on track with my 270/308 wildcat and need to decide which parent case I will be using. Originally bought a lot of 500 Winchester 7mm-08 brass to neck down but since sold it as the project got sidelined. Thinking about going with 260 Remington brass and necking up.

Is there any rule of thumb that can be used when deciding which would be the best method of selecting the parent brass?

Howdy !

One guide you might use is..... who makes the best qual brass in a calibre you can work with.

In the case of .243 Win basic, if you were an addict of
Lapua brass and found out that they made .243 Win cases but not
.260 Rem say; then you'd go with .243 brass.

Necking up from .244' nominal inside neck diam to .270 cal
is not that great a jump. It would allow you to avoid build up ' doughnuts ' inside the wildcat brass' necks.
Conversly, neck down from .308 MIGHT bring with it a slight propensity for the brass to, start ) develope doughnuts.

Best of luck in your endeavors.
