Neck turning

Looking for best results and best options ? I have a rcbs trimm pro 2 does the neck turner work good on this device thanks . I like the way forester works but I don't think it will fit the shaft on the rcbs any thoughts i seen them in YouTube

I would not use any devise that holds the case at the base and restricts any wobble as this tends to induce a lot of runout in the neck. But . . . even so, I suppose after a firing or two that runout is mitigated.

There should not be any wobble if you FL size before you expand the neck. If you do encounter non-concentric necks after neck turning just FL size. I hold cases in a collet chuck on my lathe (220 rpm) and turn with a K&N hand held turner.

The Pumpkin neck turner is the best I have ever seen. Matching expander and turning mandrels, and adjusting cutting depth by .0001 makes it really nice.

have one that will turn the outside and also can get mandrel to turn inside as well if needed. you can get a neat little tool on ebay that will basically mount the trimmer on a rail and attach a motor at the turn handle to make a motorized unit. cost 94.99 or so.

I have tried several and have finally sold off all the rest except the first one (Sinclair) but it is going soon, this is what I have ended up with and Called John about a problem with the 30BR case and he gave me the .3085 mandrel (because of the spring back) that has made turning the BR and Major case a breeze.
You are using their neck turning lathe now? Are you getting the brass build up that appears to be happening on the mandrel that is being shown in his demonstration video?

thanks

Gerald

Yes you do get a little build up of cut material but I've done a thousand cases or more and not really a problem

That’s their Titanium Nitride finish, which is gold, and he mentions it being lubed up. I do think we’re seeing any brass build up. That said, their Black Nitride mandrels are even slipperier.

I just started neck turning .223 Rem brass with the K&M tool. I am holding the case in a 3/8" collet in my lathe. 220 RPM seems to be a good speed. The biggest problem I encountered was sizing the neck correctly. Too tight a fit on the turner mandrel and you generate too much heat even with Imperial sizing die wax. I am annealing my brass before I size it. I use gauge pins to adjust the neck ID for a good fit without generating excessive heat. Different make cases require different preparation.

Overall I am very impressed with the K&M tool. Their cutter adjustment is very repeatable and it is easy to change a cut by 0.0002" or even less..

I would highly recommend the 21st Century neck turner as I have used the PMA and Sinclair tool over the years and nothing can beat the 21st Century tool.
