neck turning wog

6.5-284
Fired Laupua brass
savage action
bumped .002-3" w/ FL die (honed open, no expander)
necked with wilson die
sinclair expander
K&M turning tool and shell holder

So I noticed that as I turn the necks on some of my cases, I get some wog as case spins about the mandrel.

I gather this is becasue the head of the case isn't true after firning?

'sound right?

'Haven't tried this with new brass yet, waiting on a K&M expander. The Sinclair is a bit too tight, and I'd rather not use it on the new stuff.

'the case kinda "wobbles" about the mandrel, rather than spinning unformly about its (mandrel's) axis. like a bent-axel effect.

the case is VERY tight on the mandrel, so its not a situation where its flopping loosely.

Sorry, I'm not sure "wog" is even a real word, we just use it a lot where I work...

Get a 21st century reloading case driver and that will go away. I have both. Your cases are a little off center in the holder. The 21st has a peg the goes in the primer pocket, and an O ring that gives traction hand tight.

If you are going to contradict someone, perhaps your answer should be a bit longer. I have both case drivers and have experienced what the OP asked about.

You answered your own question. Not all your cases are straight. This is normal, thats why you hold the turning tool lightly and allow it to float with the case neck. When I turn new brass, most have some wobble to them, some do run pretty true too.

You are absolutely correct, WOG is a British term for "Westernized Oriental Gentleman" meaning dark skinned people from Africa and Eastern countries.

If your saying BoydAllen is wrong about anything then you must live in Colorado and are spending all your money smoking weed.

When reading a BoydAllen posting if it could be filmed if would look like a E.F. Hutton TV commercial.

My 2 cents ;)

The reason you're having problems with the tightness is because the mandrels you are using are both the same diameter. The Sinclair Expander for 6.5mm probably measures .263 (.001 under bullet diameter) the K&M neck turning mandrel for 6.5mm also measures .263. Your expander should be .0007-.001 larger than the neck turning mandrel to give you some clearance and account for a little springback.

If the wobble is tremendous you've got a lot of eccentricity (is that even a real word?) somewhere in the system. Check the runout of some cases after they are fired but before you size them, they should be pretty much dead nuts, being more than .001 would shock me even for a Savage. If the runout is good after firing, check the runout after sizing, if it is over say .002" you have a die or press problem. If the cases check out and are good, the wobble is in the method you are using to spin the cases. Spin the cases in their holder (whatever you are using) and visually check it. If it wobbles a lot you can change something there, but you can more easily allow whichever hand you are holding the neck turner in to kind of float and follow the wobble of the case. This will at least keep your necks consistent which is the whole reason you're probably neck turning to begin with.

I hope this helps.

Understood on the sinclair/K&M tolerencing GPat. I ordered K&M expander a couple days ago..

Yes, the wobble is all right at the shell holder/head, I can see it (the wobble) just spinning the case in free air… I'm using the K&M shell holder in a very slowly spinning cordless drill.

I did check concentricity before/after firing, this is Lapua, and as memory serves, finished rounds went under .002" TIR just short of the olive, and also mid way between the case mouth and the shoulder.

I just started turning more for fun (??) than anything, trying to see if I could diminish the runout. I realize the general consensus is that it adds no value to a plain factory rifle such as I have.

I've yet to see where wobble actually hurts the turn. But you do need a proper fit to the mandrel.
Shouldn't mix systems.

The acronym "WOG" stands for Water, Oil, or Gas (Air). Usually cheap brass valves have "WOG" cast into the body of the valve, this lets the installer know what the valve is capable of handling.

or

"WOG" (water, oil, gas pressure) is said to correspond to "CWP" (Cold Working Pressure). CWP is the maximum pressure rating allowed under normal "anbient" temperature conditions, which are usually understood to be -29°C to 38°C.

Google is your friend.

You need to do three things to "expand" your vocabulary and knowledge .

1. Buy a British Enfield rifle and spend time in the forums with its British and Commonwealth members.

2. Watch the 1962 movie "Lawrence of Arabia" with Peter O'Toole.

3. And drink more grog you stupid Bloody Wog! ::)

If any British forum members give you a hard time then just tell them it only took 165 minutes for Mel Gibson to defeat the British and General Cornwallis at Yorktown. ;)
