Neck turning - do you??

Wondering how many of you neck turn your brass for your long range cartridges??

If so, what neck turning tool do you use, and are you happy with it?

Thanks in advance!!

Walker,

Yep, sure do. I have a .269 neck chamber so I turn to .26730.
I feel every little bit helps.
My neck turning tool is a mis-mash. It a Sinclair NT3000 with a carbide turning mandrel by Ron Hoehn, and a Sinclair .25 cal. expander mandrel turned down to be just a bit larger than the Hoehn turning mandrel.
There is no standard for neck turning tools. Sinclair mandrels are compatable with Stiller turners, but not K&M. The Hoehn mandrel is compatable with K&M but not Sinclair expanders. The Pumpkin is in a class by itself and that includes price.
There are proponents of each and every brand. They all turn necks so it comes down to who you want to go with.
Do a search here and at benchrest.com it will yield a ton of threads on the subject. I did a write up do a search for "my neck turning setup" you'll find it there.

Have you seen the new kit offered by Sinclair in their new catalog page 28 kit 3...looks like a nice set-up for the money.

RHINOUT!

I'm a dealer for K&M and feel I offer the best price available on there products. I personally use K&M products in my neck turning and primer seating. I also use the K&M arbor press with the force guage as well for seating my match ammo.
If you are intertested take a look at what I have in the K&M lineup.

I turn the necks of my factory-neck chambers just enough to take off the high spots. I have always used a Forster Original trimmer for this, without the auto-advance which can leave the neck looking "threaded", and have no complaints at all. I check them on an RCBS Case Master and they are within .0005" which is close enough for all but the most anal.

The PPC gang, back in the early days of BR shooting, had to turn necks by drastic amounts to get good cases and had to cut the chambers to match. The ".262 neck" today is a leftover of that era, but with good quality, spelled Lapua) brass it is no longer necessary to turn that much, IMHO.

The purpose, to me, of case prep is to achieve uniformity. I want every round I close the bolt on to be as identical as I can make them. I also believe that it does not take the latest-greatest,spelled expensive) gadgets to do it. Most of the time-consuming case prep needs only be done once, primer pocket uniforming, flash hole deburring, neck chamfer, neck turn, etc.). After that, case length and the "donut" need to be watched. I'm becoming convinced that proper neck annealing is one of the single most important steps to consistency -- and that is another whole subject.
