Neck turning before or after FF

I am waiting on a 6mm Rem. AI barrel and have a question about turning necks. It will be a "no turn" neck but I would like to just clean up the necks ( have cabin fever).

Can I clean up the necks on the Win. brass or will it be better to wait til after they have been fire formed.

Thanks,

Cover Dog

You can but you dont have to. If i ever have to or want to turn necks before they are formed i use a expander to get them all to the same size and then do the clean up. So if you are doing a .243 my expander is a .242 and my pilot on the neck turner is a .240. You just have to get them all to the same size and you wont have many problems....

If your 6mm will be a "tight neck", you probably have no choice but to turn before fire forming. Measure your loaded round and compare with the chamber's neck. The loaded round should be about .002-,003" smaller.

If not a tight neck, just barely skim them with the turner. I prefer to do this after FF.

Always expand the necks before turning.

The necks won't be true until the case has been fired after turning, so it makes sense to turn before fireforming. In addition, the unfired brass will be softer and easier to turn.
