Neck turner skipping case mouth

What’s your chambers neck dimension? What you are seeing is normal. Yes, the necks taper with the material nearer the shoulder being thicker. .011 will clean it all the way up. That’s why .268 necks are popular for people who turn and use lapua brass.
.243+.011+.011=.265. Leaves .003 for a .268 chamber.
I miss a bit on the mouth on the first pass with new, unfired brass both sized and unsized.

One way would be if the was a clean spot from the cutter only on one side. Another would be if the cut spot was oblong toward the mouth of the case.

it sticks out like a sore thumb. a machined bright surface then an annealed looking spot thats a different color and not machined.

We are removing approx. 45% of the factory neck material, we have gone way past the point where the cutter is just cleaning up.
Okay ,I never new how much was safe to take off. For some reason I always had .012 stuck in my mind

Okay that gives me something to shoot for. So if you don't mind me asking, just what is your process when turning new brass? Do you size then expand or just expand and turn?

One of the more important and critical aspects of cutting case's is that your mandrels must all be the same size, IE. Expander, primary and secondary cutters. Your tools must be set to the correct dimensions(A FIELDER GAUGE works well) and engage the shoulder so VERY SLIGHTLY.There are some that say you need to Trim for length first, i do not dispute that, it depends on the length of the brass and the uniformity of the batch. I buy my brass in lots of 1000, All the same lot#.
I like Dillons case lube, it is a Lanolin and alcohol base, once you lube the neck the alcohol evaporates and leaves a film of lanolin. Expand , Set in chuck(Neck turning motor) with best concentricity, Primary cut at .0010, put lube on a Q tip and lube the outside of the neck, second cut at .00825, trim for length, inside and outside neck chamfer, clean inside case with a Q-Tip(Brass Shavings) wipe outside with a paper towel, Measure,Place them in your bump die with a tight neck for fire forming ,Put in a Mason jar with acetone for a quick bath(removes dirt and lanolin) Let air dry 30 minutes , and you're ready to load. It takes about 6 minutes to cut 1 case, you want PERFECTION, not volume. Those dimensions are for a PPC with a 262 Chamber.
The people that taught me are world class shooters,I was told that i need to "play it Forward"and share the knowledge. After you screw up a couple of hundred you'll find your own way as i have.
Below is a photo of my neck turning equipment.
