Neck tension too light?

Salt bath is more consistent than flame if you are willing to hazard the risk.

I finally bit the bullet and bought an Amp. No regrets as the time it has saved me has paid for it twice over.

My personal level of irritation with inconsistent brass behavior is slowly reaching the level of an AMP buyer in spe.

I am using it only because the committee of wise men adopted the position stating that using a mandrel is mandatory if you want to win matches.

Wise men... LOL... Lazy men is more like it.

People are always trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

If you run a tight neck chamber and neck turn your brass, you will be far better off.

Why?

1) The less neck resizing you need to do, the less variation your sizing process will create.
2) The less the neck expands when fired, the less it gets work hardened.
3) The less you have to resize the neck after being fired, the less the sizing process work hardens your brass.
4) If you measure about run out, you will not find it on a fired case, but the runout will increase the more you size down your neck regardless of die or press.

The most dimensionally perfect case you will ever find is one that has just been fired in your rifle. What you do to it after that is what will make or break the deal.

I’m not really sure what guys fascination with light bullet hold, maybe it’s just an internet thing cause personally I’ve never had a gun shoot better with less hold.

To state the counter argument...

The less neck tension you have, the less variation in neck tension you will have.

If you can successfully process ammo with light neck tension without using an expander mandrel, you have the option of increasing neck tension if you feel it will result in an improvement.

The problem with many hand loaders is their loading practices are so full of short cuts and variability, that for them, more neck tension is the only viable option.
