Neck tension & clearance

I’m putting together a 22 CM using lapua 6 CM brass turning necks to cleanup oh and it’s a bolt action just wondering is 2 thousand ok neck tension or not enough? Also gunsmith wants to do three thousands for neck clearance this is for a hunting rig is this ok he saids it ok 1 1/2 per side .

.002 neck tension may be enough but testing is required for each rifle. .0015 clearance per side is on the edge but some like it close. After firing a round in the chamber check to see if a bullet will slide in the case mouth freely. If not most agree there is not enough clearance.

In a mag fed rifle, I'd use more neck tension to prevent potential bullet setback in the mag, under recoil. As for clearance, I'd probably prefer a tad more but .003 should be sufficient. IME, you won't find more or less accuracy going from .003 to say .004 but you'll be working the brass less and no other downside to using .004, IMHO. Neck tension is another story if the bullets get pushed too deep in the case, bouncing to and fro with recoil. That can be dangerous. I'd use at least .003 neck tension and a bit of that is based on recoil of the cartridge. It might be fine in a light recoiling 223 or similar. Also, you may lose a little tension with firing and sizing over time. It might be fine at first and then your .002 tension might become .0015ish due to springback, in short order.

Generally, I say listen to your smith but those are both pretty iffy numbers in a hunting rig, especially if mag fed.

Ok thanks I think I will have the gunsmith open up neck clearance up to .004 makes me feel better. And will go with .003 nk tension and it’s not to late to do it.it’s hard add material.
