Neck sizing with Redding dies

I've seen this issue come up in other threads, but never followed up on it. Now it's bugging me enough to ask: How many of you are unable to size a neck all the way down to the neck-shoulder junction with Redding bushing dies?

It's normally not much of a problem until times like now when I'm trying to form 6-284 cases. I'm either going to have to have another die bored out, buy a Wilson neck sizer, or find a setup that works to get these cases sized down.

I use a Forster Co-Ax, so I've started wondering if it's just that the shell-holder jaws are too thick. I don't have any interest in switch presses--I love the Co-Ax--but I'm thinking that I might have to try the shell-holder adapter so that I can use Redding shell-holders. However, if others are having the same problem, and they're using Redding shell-holders, then I'll just be grinding shell-holders instead of boring dies.

So, let me know if you have the same problem, especially if you've found a solution.

thanks,
robert

Hi Bob,

I checked with the folks at Redding for you and they said that the S dies are designed this way intentionally. This is done so that the rear portion of the unsized neck will help keep the cartridge aligned on the centerline of the bore axis. They will most likely not make a custom S die to size all the way down to the neck shoulder junction and it would be very hard for anyone to do this to the die once it has been hardened. So there is nothing wrong with the way your press is working. It is just the way the dies are made to work.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

I'm not aware of any bushing die that will size the entire neck of a case. When forming cases or prepping them for neck turning. I don't know of any way around it. I generally use a standard Redding FL die.

Thanks for clearing that one up, guys. And thanks for the definitive answer, Bob. I've seen a number of people argue that if you weren't getting the whole neck there was something wrong with your setup. Apparently they were wrong.

I've been trying to get away cheap on the tooling for the 6-284 'cause I'm just not sure how I'm gonna like shooting such a big boomer out in the field. I guess I'll have to spring for an FL sizer, at least. If I wind up liking it, I'll spring for a proper set of dies.

My Harrell 6mmBR FL bushing die sizes the whole neck with a redding TiNit bushing...

I had a Redding S Bushing Die cut out at the bottom of the bushing seat and this die sizes all of the neck w/ Redding and/or Wilson bushings.
