Neck sizing w/o expander ball??

Was reading that J.B. was getting 4 and 5 reloads without trimming or cases growing.
Would neck sizing without the expander ball be a advantage?
What to do you do to "deprime"? How bout sanding down the expander ball? That will keep from pulling the neck?? Ideas and opinions "please". And thanks. Mike.
,Using RCBS full length and Neck sizer in Comp Die set!) No bushings!

I deprime with an RCBS universal decapping die. It doesn't do anything to the case at all, it just punches out the primers.

Gunna hafta get me one! Only thing. Will need a "small" primer pin. Maybe Sinclair or Brownell's!? Will have to start looking.
My 6BR dies from RCBS have the large pin set up.The smallest that RCBS makes. Had to get the small setup from Sinclair.
Got about 100 cases to resize after a trip to the range today!
Just LOVE that 6BR! :D

gunamonth,Dave): Interesting! I'am running a .272 neck/chamber so I don't expect to run into any problems. I have had to trim "some" cases so that's what got me to wondering about the sizing business. You get stuck doing something one way for a long time and you don't give it a second thought.
When J.B.,,and a few others) as well as you, said that they didn't have to trim for quite a few loadings, that got me to thinking. There's got to be a better/different way to resize. Change is good!! ;) Turning down the expander ball and the primer pin might be an "easy" option. Worth a try!! And thanks "guys" for the input. Been there, done that, has always been an advantage! Mike.

Been running 55s with AA2230C. Can't get to the lands with those but anything heavier will jam. Got good clean necks with 34.0 grs. with no pressure problems. Accuracy in the range of 1/2" at 100 yds. Lighter loads will soot real bad! 34.5 is next on the list. Steel silhouette at 330 yards, every time. :D Need to get back to targets and see how tight a group I can get, but between now and then I'am having a ball!!

For the 30BR, I run without the expander ball. I use a 7mmBR Redding Type-S Full length resizing die that I opened up to take the 30 cal necks. Since I neck turn the brass, and use bushings to set the neck tension, the expander is something that I dont feel I need. The Redding die comes with an expander ball, and a smaller diameter holder that is used to hold the decapping pin, small pin) in place. ,I have a 30cal expander ball which I needed for necking up the brass initially, that I purchased seperately)

In other words, with a Redding Type-S FL bushing die, you can run with, or without the expander ball. You then select the bushing you need to set your neck tension, which you need to purchase seperately. The dies VERY adjustable, you can do a lot of things with them.

Just went out and played for a while. Have a bunch of "Norma" brass so I used the standard size decapping pin,run way out so the case just starts in the die to push the primers out. Worked slick! If I push the case up into the die, just to resize the neck,"without the expander ball",they start growing. From 1.557 to 1.563. 1.560 is max! Trim time! What gives??
I did notice that the bullets have a "good snug fit" without sizing the neck. Is that a option? The cases still chamber! Opinions please! Thanks. Mike.

How the neck sizeing die works, non Bushing)is that it makes the neck under size and then when you extract the expander ball that is what is sizeing the neck if you take any off it,expander ball) you increase neck tension.
To control neck tension and not overwork your brass you realy do need to go to a Bushing type die, you will get better consistance in neck tension and less working of the brass and hopefully less neck growth.

Guys: I had never given it a second thought. You resize your brass and when they get to "max", you trim. Done a "lot" of trimming in my day! Went to a RCBS power trimmer just for that!
When the folks started talking about "not trimming for 4 or 5 reloadings" it got me to thinking. There's got to be a better way! I guess I'll have to check into it more and see about a different style die just for the 6BR. Change is good! ;)
And maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks! :D
