neck sizing reduction

Are there any articles on this forum that tells how to properly reduce the size of the neck/ case mouth? I am trying to use a .17 bullet on a 221 fireball case. nilebartram

I have never preferred necking down to necking up, however in your case, you don't have much choice (other than buying new Remington brass).
When you neck it down in regular dies, it creates a "DONUT" around the base of the neck and shoulder junction. You will need get a die that goes all the way down to the datum line to get it correct. and then you will need to neck turn that off for it to chamber correctly.

Unless your 17 is a tight neck or a custom chamber, you would be much better off getting some factory brass. I understand that that bras may not be the quality of the brass you have, but just add up the time and the equipment that you will need to ensure that 221 brass chambers fine in your 17, and its an easy decision.

To get quickly in the ball park, use a 20vt body die followed by a 17fb body die.
Then you can use a bushing die and determine if you need to turn for your rifle/pistol chamber.

You may have to go to 204 cal first . Cut of a lee 204 die to get what you need .

Its best to go to 204 before 172 especially if you are doing 17AH. The Bullberry double end form die is a good economical die for a two step reduction from 22 to 17. A good flitz polish on the first Bullberry I got sure helped but then again he used to sell them for 25 bucks.

I have never used one of the Bullberry form dies and have questions.

Is the case supported at all during form?
How do you set your shoulder length, and angle?
Lastly are they even available any more?
TIA

Just noting that with a 20vt body die, you can adjust shoulder length and it will change the 221 23deg to 30degree angle.

I have been to the website. It looks like the info is the same as I saw it from when Fred retired last year.
Since I really do not need one of these dies, I have not tried to contact Troy to see if available.
Appears to me to be kind of a guesstimate to not foul the shoulder when reducing the neck diameter?
