Neck Micrometer

Any thoughts on neck micrometers, the good the bad and hopefully the cheap? I dont mind spending money as long as I'm getting a better product for it.

Bought a cheap Lyman, but did not feel it was accurate. Now have a Mitutoyo ball mic. Great tool, but near $100. Check e-bay under ball micrometers and tubing micrometers.

I prefer a Starrett Multi V Anvil micrometer for measuring neck, wall thickness, hole locations over a ball micrometer .

I had one, sold it. Just never used it.
The only true measurment for accurate neck turning is what a seated bullet of your choice mic's on the neck of your turned brass. Just my opinion on how to save $100.

The neck diameter of a loaded round is the ultimate goal, but very inconvenient when you're setting up the tool; I certainly wouldn't want to seat a bullet each time I need a measurement and then pull it. I find a ball micrometer to be very convenient, and the $40 model I bought is sufficiently accurate for the job. I found that the full-diameter stem made it difficult to get accurate readings on short case necks,.223 Remington), so I used a carbide grinder to put a 45-degree bevel on the stem, reducing the diameter of the face to ~1/8"; that's something I was much more comfortable doing on an inexpensive tool.
