Neck Down ?

Fixing to start prepping brass for a couple new chambers which require necking down - one from 6.5 to .224 and the other from 6.5 to 20 cal. I have a FL 6mm die but beyond that will be handled with neck size bushings. Both cases will be neck turned for their intended chamberings and starting with new Lapua brass.

In an attempt of avoiding a donut, should I outside neck turn them at the 6mm stage as well as final size or take them to size and then outside turn them? I am equipped to neck them at any stage in the necking down process. If need be, I will pick up an inside cutting mandrel for each.

For what it's worth, I always turn the necks before sizing down and never size down more than .006 per bushing. Some folks go as high as .010 per bushing and that works too.

How much or whether you even need to turn will depend on the size of your chamber.

If I were trying to get maximum accuracy, I would turn enough to get the load to chamber and fire safely, and then trim if necessary and turn again after firing once or twice.
