NBRSA Ojai 600

I would like to thank the Ojai guys for putting on a great match last Sunday. I think a good time was had by all. If anyone is interested in 600 yard shooting this is a great place to learn with great people running match.
There were several new shooters, the match directors and veteran shooters spent time as needed to help the new people get set up and on paper so if you are a new shooter dont be afraid to come out and shoot as these guys will bend over back wards to help you get started.
Thank you Barry and the whole Ojai crew.

Thank You, Leroy, and Everyone Else...

No thanks are due to me, Leroy, as all I did was pit duty like everyone else.

But Barry...

This guy goes way above and beyond the call of duty.

We're all grateful he went to so much trouble to put this together, and ultimately pleased to see some of the shooters we know from Sacramento.

And proud--rightfully so, I think--of our modest range with more beauty than benches.

Of our regular monthly shooters, I was sad that Paul Fielding and Mike Leonard didn't shoot.

Paul ran the pits, and, as usual, did an excellent job. He's as capable a man as I know.

Mike's Leonard's back has been giving him a hard time: Still, I think, the boy can shoot, he regularly shoots 6.5x47 with Berger 130s--the same load that Don shot so well--and I'm hoping he wasn't intimidated.

Ojai co-chair Mark LaFevers contributed greatly, as usual. And shot for record.

As we all know, I'll shoot every opportunity I get, and I don't need to win.

Six targets?

Let me at 'em!

And after all the talk of good conditions at Ojai, perhaps the Gods saw fit to remind us that we are but mere mortals.

I've seen Sacramento easier to shoot than Ojai on Sunday.

Yikes!

The score sheet showed, though, as usual, the best shooters win.

Thank you, thank Don and Lou, Brenda and Ted, Dan who came up from Pala and kicked a little ass, John Crawford, John Adams and Vic, everyone who made an effort to come up and join us at a range of which we are very proud.

And Barry Bluhm, especially.

Here is the final results sheet. Two-Gun results are provided for score and group, but final standings for overall weren't calculated for combined score and group. MS Word doc attached.

According to the match report for the 1000 yard nationals you published on BR Central I won the heavy gun 3 target group agg, I think Craig owes me some wood for that as I didn't get any thing for it at the awards. You guys should have been at Ojai, the wind there make slough house look tame.
I will try and make some your monthly matches next year.

Regarding the winds at Ojai. Keep in mind that a front had just moved through, and the experts had been predicting thundershowers the previous day.

Typical conditions are very calm through about 9:30 - 10:00 when the breezes start. There is often a prevailing left to right, but the range is situated where three valleys come together so it's not unusual to have a tail wind at the firing line, a left to right midcourse, and a right to left eddy at the target bay.

However, in the early morning it tends to be very calm and we've seen many 1.5" groups shot here in practice.

With the winds the way they were most shooters were working their target puller to death with many more sighter shots than would normally be fired, trying to get a read on the rapid variation. One stint in the pits like that and I'm ready to redesign the whole lever hoisting target system!

I'm told that Sacramento has a really topnotch counterbalanced vertical roll-up target system. Does anyone have detail pictures and/or dimensions of that system that I could use to estimate materials and build from? We might get lucky and find a window of opportunity to upgrade at Ojai. molafevers@cox.net

Another thanks to all those who came from near and far to participate, you really made it a great day! We honestly do have world record perfect air in the early morning hours fairly regularly, maybe next time will be the one.
