N550 in 308

Talked to a guy from VVn today about using N550 in my 243AI and he recommended against it. but Highly recommend it's use for 168-175 grain 308 loads.
Anyone try this?

It works pretty well with heavier bullets in .308 especially the 190s. I haven't used it in a 243 so I can't help you there but I think it ought to work with something like the 105 or 115 bullets.

I am working on a load for 185s. So far I have found it to be temp sensitive and it seems to burn dirty in my 28" barrel. I haven't really found the happy spot yet but after trying to work up to the book load and coming close to loosing primers at 68*. I am sticking to around 46.2 to 46.7 and adjusting for temp. Work up carefully.

Sorry I am using Winchester brass and wolf primers in a tight bore obermeyere barrel with a palma95 chamber throated +.030.

I have shot a lot of VV550 in a 308 with Berger 210s.
Great powder in temperatures below 70 degrees. Very temperature sensative in warmer temperatures. With 32" barrel and 46. grains I could get 2650fps. But it hammered the brass.

I had a nice load for 88gr Berger FB using N550 in my regular 243Win at one point. I don't remember the load now, it would be in my book though would not help you anyway - but it was the most accurate of anything I tried.

I've loaded some 165gr NABs for my 308 with N550, so your information from Vit is really good to hear. Quickload suggests it should be excellent for both the 165s and 180s in the 308.
