N160 and 6.5x47?

I have been really happy with H4350 in my 6.5x47. I believe that N160 is close in burn rate to H4350 and burns cool, so wondering if N160 would work in my 6.5x47 with 140s?

Anyone out there try this combo?

Vihtavouri has N140/150 and N540/550, but no data for N160, wonder if too slow?

I've not tried it but I know it'd be a bit too slow burning and bulky for the this case. It would no doubt work but MVs would be down even with geavily compressed loads and you'd be well short of 100% charge burn.

It's not just a burning rate issue. N160 has a low specific energy level at 3,620 KJ / Kg

That compares to 3,760 for H4350, 3,780 for N150, and 4,050 for N550.

(That's one reason why VarGet is so popular in this small case number - its specific energy is up with those of the 'high energy' infused nitroglycerin numbers like N550, Re15, and Re17 - actually exceeds those of the Reloder propellants which run ~4,000 KJ / Kg.)

N160 starts to be usable with the slightly larger cased 6.5s with 140s, .260 Rem and the Creedmoor but even there usually doesn't give as high MVs as more popular choices.

Excellent info here and right on IMHO. Wondering Laurie if there is a posted chart somewhere with this info that you could share?

I have tried it with 140amax. With the lack of availability of h4350 over here I've been looking for an alternative before my supply runs dry. 41.4 of n160 showed promise although down on my usual load by 60fps in my barrel. Es was very low so felt it could work with a little tuning. I only had a little of it and haven't bought any more to try yet. My rifle is throated for the 140amax so I have a bit more room in the case to play with, 41.4 isn't compressed, if you're working with a short throat it may well be. Start lower and work up of course. Atb rf

KY -

Please take as info:
- Kaltron-Pettibone informed that VV500-series powders work best w/ the heavier/heaviest bullet weights in each cal.
For your application, N560 might also do as-well-as ( or better ) than N160 ?

FWIW -
Surplus " D85 " powder is ( for all practical purposes ) a " ball powder ) burn rate equivalent to 4350.
