N150?

Anyone have any data useing N150 with 140 gr bullets in the 284 Win? Have some round loaded up with Rl15 but also want to load some with N150 before I head to the range.

What grain bullets are you planning to shoot? What is the OAL of loaded round and also the lenght of your barrel?

Erik I want to shoot the 140 Nosler Ballistic tip. Oal will be 2.975 @ .020 off the lands with a 24" barrel # 1400 Lothar Walther SS barrel.

Doug,
I don't know if this is useful, but I was just fireforming some 6.5 brass (40 pcs) using 38 grs of N150 because I had some just sitting around. The bullets were Berger 140 VLD's and shot at 100 yds. The bullets were seated .010 into the lands in a new MG Hart 1:8 barrel and I'll be darn if they didn't put together 1/2" or better 5 shot groups. I then moved up to N160 and kicked the loads up to 44.0 - 44.5, but they didn't group as well as the N150 did. But I've also now backed out of the land to .005 out and will retry N150 just to see if it was a fluke or not. BTW, The VV manual doesn't show N150 on their "6.5-284 Norma" page but does show N160 having been tested in a 1:9 Twist barrel tested with Lapua 139 Scenars with a range of 40.1 - 49.2 AND Lapua 144 FMJBT with a range of 43.2 - 48.5 again using N160. The COL is shown as 3.110 which is very close to what I am now testing with the Berger 140's and the Sierra 142's both VLD. Don't know if that all tells you anything, but just thought I'd pass it along. BTW, if my memory serves me well, I think Erik C. has that nifty computer program regarding loading with various powders being sold commercially with loads that don't show up even the manufacturers manuals.

This link may be of intrest to you,

I have used the suggested load in this link of 48 grs. of N150 WLR and 140 BTs in the past to work up, I believe I ended up about 50 grs but not at home to look that up and the velocity though.

I will say that RL17 is "the Powder" for the 284 IMHO. Gives great velocity, is very accurate and takes the 284 to another level, the 284 has been my main hunting rifle besides the 25-06 for years, Dave

Thanks Dfry. I am anxious to try RL17. I emailed RICHARD FRAILEY to find out if he has done any work with RL17 in the 284 Win. Havn't heard anything back yet. I will post here when/if I do

Here is a link to some very intewresting data on RL17.

I'll have to find my notes, but depending on if you use a long or short action and how much RL17 powder you can fit in the case will depend on the brass and bullet you use, as I'm sure you know, Barnes TSX or TTSXs will take up much more case room in a short action. If I recall correctly 52-53 grs are all you can fit in a WW case with a 150 gr. Barnes. Shorter bullets like Partitions, Hornady interlocks, Sierra's, etc. will give you more room. A 150 TSX out of my 22" A-bolt gives 3050 fps. Of course, pick your bullet and work up to your max. If you have a long action and can seat the bullet out for the longer mag length, then you can get some remarkable velocities. All my loads are for my hunting rifle and 2.9"OAL is max for my mag length rounds. I can say that I have seen loads that have a couple grains over what I use. But I don't know what action they used, how far the bullet is seated out, etc. But again, as you know, work up, for a 140 grain bullet, starting at about 51 grains should be fine. Dave
