n135 hot load

Hey guys, I loaded up 10 rounds today with N135 and 80 grain bergers 20 though off hard jam. Started at 29.5 grains of N135 and fired 1 round and bolt lift was good. Fired the second round and could barely open the bolt and when I did get it open the primer fell out. Obviously way too hot. Both fired cases show ejector marks. I measured the second fired case right on the rim and it had expanded 14 thou larger than a new case. I was able to get up to 32 grains of varget with the same bullet no problem. I double checked my scale and all is good. Could this be a hot lot of N135?

I shoot the Berger column and WEB (65 gr.) with 32.0 gr of N-135 and no problems.
Just for fun I ran quickload using your data and did not see pressure getting sketchy until I ran it with the bullet seated VERY deep in the case or a couple of grains more powder. QL does not take into account things like primer types, neck tension, and headspace/case size.

Thanks for taking the time to check. The bullets are seated way up the case so that shouldn't be an issue. I should have mentioned this is an 8 twist barrel and am using cci 450 primer. I guess ill just have to start around 28 grains and work up.

I just looked at a hornady book with 80 grain bullets and you are way over book max as that is 28.0 grains max. I would start around 26.0 grains and work up in 2 tenths per move. You in my estimation are way over pressured. Where did you come up with that particular load of 29.1 grains. It is dangerous to start at a top load in the first place, always and I mean always start low with just a couple rounds and load you pressure test rounds to look for pressure signs. Some load 3 at a time looking for accuracy nodes.

You are correct. I did start out way too high with this powder and im lucky all I had was a blown primer. Numerous posts I found regarding 80 berger and n135 stated 30 grains as a starting load. I think it shows 31.5 on the 6br info page and minus 10 percent would be 28.3 as a start. Ill start at 26 and go from there.

According to the Berger manual, it lists 32.1 as max for V-N135 and 80 grain FB for the 6MM BR Norma. Velocity is listed at 3066 f/s.

For the 6MM BR Remington it lists a max load at 30.3 gr.

I shoot the Berger 80 FB (6MM BR Norma) using 29.7 gr V-N135 and CCI450 for 3068 f/s in a Cooper 10 Twist. No signs of pressure and very accurate.

There is a difference between the 6BR Rem and 6BR Norma cases. Not sure which you are referring to.

I was referring to 6mmbr Norma. I started again at 27 grains of N 135 and my max load with the 80 grain berger is 28.7 grains. Any more and I get stiff bolt lift. Very good accuracy at 28.4 grains. I sure like the 80 grain bergers. They out shoot everything else that I have tried in this 8 twist at 200 yards hands down.

I have a 6BR 14 twist 68 grain custom bullets and with 29.3 of 8208 it will consistently shoot in the 1"s so long as I do my part. This is not a hot load. No bolt lift problems at all. Michael Brown
