,my opinion)284 win. reclaims its identity

Me and my father have been shooting this cartridge for 15 years and it is my favorate.I know what powder it likes from 120gr bullets up .I have killed deer beyond 800 yards with it.I believe with these new HIGH BC bullets, recent success, and better barrel life, makes it superior to the 6.5x284 . I believe in the next 2 years it will catch up with the 6.5 version, .Only time will tell. What do you all think?

It may prove to be the most efficient 7mm in existence? With RL-17, and the bullets you mention, it may end up being the best medicine at 1000, with barrel life that is acceptable? It's got my interest.

With RL17 in mind, I am curious to see if a little more is better with the 7 SAUM. It may be get the same return as the 284, but it has some potential to do so as RL17 is billed as a shortmag powder. Time will tell. . . .

HV100 Hybrid will also be a good powder for the short mags, I know it woke my 25/284 up. When I have the time I'll work up a load with it in my .284 XP-100 with the 140 grain Ballistic Tip it shoots very good with H-4350...
When my Lawton action and barrel show up I'll start on my 7SAUM Ackley with it...

In the hunting world, the only down side, if you can call it that, is with the 6.5-284 and the straight 284 case, with the high BC bullets, is that it takes it from a short action cartridge to a long action version, or single shot only.

PREACHER, I SHOOT 140 BALLISTIC TIPS IN MY 284,DO not waste your time on h4350,my gun shoots shoots groups under 1/4 inch at 100 yards and under 2 inches at 600yards ...when i first had my rifle built i wanted to throuw it away after trying 4350.then i tried N160,54 TO 56 GRAINS) AND MY GROUPS WENT FROM 1/2 OR BIGGER TO THE GROUPS I MENTIONED ABOVE .save that 4350 for something that reALLY LIKES IT...IF YOUR BARREL IS SHORT LIKE 22INCHES USE N150,48 TO 48.5 GRAINS).I PROMISE YOU WILL BE SURPRISED.IF YOU WANT TO SHOOT 150 GRAIN USE 46 GRAINS OF R15

maybe...just maybe.

Still you have to deal with the added recoil of the 7mm and the heavier 180 grain pills.

I think it is viable if you can stop the torquing and twisting in the bags.

I know the national record was shot with a .284, but wasn't it more the shooter than the cartridage.

Whatever caliber wins a big shoot...it is 99 % of the time its a great shooter pulling the trigger.

RHINOUT!

Whatever else may be true about the 284, the first thing that impressed me was how easy it was to find accurate loads for it; this has been the case in all three of the barrels I've chambered.

As far as recoil is concerned, it's very tolorable in prone with a coat & sling, though at first it seemed a little heavy after several years of shooting 15lb. ARs & 14lb. Dashers. Part of that initial impression was due to the stock on my first 284; the 2nd one, in a Robertson H&H prone stock, is more pleasant to shoot.

I think H4831 is one of the best powders with heavy bullets, though initial trials with RL17 look promising in both accuracy & velocity. All in all, I'm glad the 284 is finally getting some of the attention it deserves.

I am rather certain the .284 Winchester is not efficient in comparison to many other 7mm rounds. It may be efficient in comparison to the magnums or among 'popular long range calibers'. Such a fact does not independently make it an efficient round.

"I am rather certain the .284 Winchester is not efficient in comparison to many other 7mm rounds."

I am shooting a 7WSM, and I am making a comparison based on that, and what I have read about some of the other 7mm's used for target. Which one did you have in mind, as I am always on that look out for efficiency?

Thanks,
Vince

I hear the argument that it is not the round or the rifle but the shooter that wins championships and sets records. IMHO that is a half-truth. Absolutely it takes talent behind the trigger, but it is like saying that a driver makes a race team. It takes a total package. Winning shooters choose equipment that makes their success possible.

Could Charles Ballard have set the national record with something other than a .284?....most definitely, but I know he has shot many rifles and rounds, and CHOSE to shoot the .284. I know for a fact that he is working on something else.

Is the .284 the best LR round? Who knows? The probability that the record will be broken with something other than a .284 is directly proportionate to the number of great shooters shooting something other than a .284
