My oldest son's South Texas management buck

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

He took this one down with my 6.5x47 Lapua. 140 berger just about dropped him just a few steps and lights out. We love that Lapua round, works on everything in our area.

If ya'll every need some company, I will be happy to join the hunt!

Otherwise, Congratulations to your son, nice buck, nice rifle

If that's a cull buck, I would really like to see the good ones!! I would never dream of letting a buck that nice walk, much less call him a cull buck. that's a nice one. like the long tines. congrats to your boy. can't wait till my son is old enough to go. he's almost 3 now. taught him how to blow on the grunt tube this year, and beat the horns together. mommy isn't too happy, especially when he sees a deer and says " i wanna shoot that deer".

on bullet performance: how far was the shot? did the bullet pass thru? what kind of damage did it do??

Not a cull just a management deer. They have some awesome jaw dropping deer that this one will never be to that one standard. Def. trophy to us. Jr. shot about 2 ribs behind the shoulder and exited out. Massive damage to the vitals. One lung was jello and clipped the heart. Almost instant death. Which is great. I never like them to suffer. I'm very impressed with the Berger bullets. Shot was just past 100 yards.

Tell your son congratulations Todd, I'm sure it's a trophy for him!
Glad the "47" is working for you.

Congratulations to both you and your son. It brings back memories of my son's first hunt with me. I think you may have spoiled him though, It's going to be difficult next year to explain that bucks like that are not the norm.

Awesome, great to hear. I just stopped by a cabelas store today on the long trip home. picked up some 140vld hunting bullets, as they didn't have the 130's, and another fresh box of 6.5creedmoor brass. maybe I will finally get to try some vld's out this year!!!! I still love the fact that it's just a management deer. I have a couple running around here that I would love to take out, as they don't need to be breeding either, but with only 3buck tags it won't be happening anytime soon!! tell your son congrats and post some more pics!!

140 gr Match Grade VLD Hunting is what I'm using. 5 hogs 2 deer and 1 coyote so far, only this buck and 2 of the hogs took a step after the shot. None of them made it past 20-30'. The coyote was the only one shot much past 100 yards at 220. Not really long range, but I'm sure as I get better the 47 will get it's legs stretched out.

Plus One Dittos. Is the season open in Jan? South Texas would be real fine to me about then!
