My new (used) 6BR in Mid-Mo

Just picked up my first F class rifle.
Savage set up with a custom trigger from 21st Cent. Shootings John Perkins. Great price for a proven rifle, 50rds ammo, dies, and mandrels. Has less then 400 rds through it before he decided to build something else.
So I got to try my hand at my first F Class rifle on Saturday and my first 10 shot group at 200y was 1.5".

I'll be sticking with his formula of Berger 105's and 27.5 Varget until I work on something of my own.
Can't wait till summer of 2013 and hitting the ranges here in Missouri, see some of you out there. I'll be the new guy spraying them all over the paper, learning how to read the wind.

Awsome. Ibet your excited.

Are you sure that isnt 29.5gr varget instead of 27.5gr ?

Welcome aboard to Fclass.

jamesgang: Yes, as Russ said, maybe should be 29.5 of Varget? 27.5 seems like a very "soft" load. I've been using 30 grs. of Varget in all my 8 twists, with 105 to 108 gr. bullets without any problems. Chronographed velocities are between 2755 and 2816 fps with very low (single digit) ES and SD numbers. Minimum and maximum velocities with different barrels, seating depths, primers, etc., but always 30 grs. of Varget.

Naturally the disclaimer is: work up to it slowly, all rifles and barrels are different.

After using the 6BR for a while, you'll wonder whey you ever used anything else. Outstanding, reliable accuracy, low recoil, good barrel life, etc. If I could only have one rifle, it would be a 6BR chambering. ;)

ps: There are a good number of 6BR Savages being used in the factory class at our local varmint for score match's and they do an excellent job, sometimes coming close to the scores posted by those of us using the 6BR in the Custom Class.

When you get around to developing your own loads, give H4895 a try. It delivers consistent results for me with Berger 105 Hybrids. Through various loads, Russian SRM (KVB-5.56M), CCI 450 and Fed 205M have all been excellent primers. [br]
The 6BR is a great cartridge and everyone should own at least one 6BR rifle. ;)

Well I cleaned it up for winter scrubbing the barrel and chamber down in preparation for load work up.
I've purchased a new blue box of Lapua, uniformed the pockets and turned the necks down to 12/1000th's. Since Varget has been a pain to locate in solid lots, I've gone with 15lbs of R-15 that should get me through the rest of this barrels life. I've also gone to CCI 450's since the BR primers are scarce.
I've loaded my work up load .020 off the lands w/ Berger 105 hybrids and started my powder at 28.0 working up to 31.0 in .02 increments.
Now I'm waiting for the first decent 50-60* weekend to head out to Green Valley in Hallsville.

I did run through the ammo that was loaded and purchased with the rifle. It was running 27.5g of Varget shooting standard Berger 105's and in heavy wind shot a 1.5" 10 shot group at 200y

It was purchased with 300-400 already down the barrel. I'll keep it as is for another 3000-3500 rounds and then swap for a new barrel and possibly take it out to a Dasher.
