My New Favorite Tripod

There always seems to be the ongoing debate for a rest....bipod vs sticks vs tripod, etc....vs buying vs building, etc. After using the tallest swivel Harris bipod for years for calling coyotes, with a fair amount of satisfaction, I just bought a new Bog-Pod tripod, and it may be the latest cat's butt for me.

My biggest complaint against the Harris, was the need for more length for the set-ups on the hillsides, and hard to keep up on moving coyotes. The new 3S models from Bog-Pod addresses both of those quite well.

It's adjustment range is from 6" to 42", with a swivel rest top. I use a bungee cord to attach it to the rest, for hands free calling and less movement to get into action.

I was going to buy the CLD-3S camo model, but found the Tac-3S on sale for $15 cheaper, so I went that route, and painted it any way.

Now I'm in need of a test subject......

I bought a Tac-3S at the Cabelas bargain cave last fall. I used it in Mexico last month sitting in a blind. Rifle said in tri-pod and rested on my leg. Hands free for glassing the whole day. I never thought of a bungee cord, that is a great idea. I like the wide head verses the V shaped older heads. I still use a Harris for most hunts, but the Bog-Pod will always come with from now on. Good luck with the 'yotes!

Hey Alf, Effendude,

Those things are the cats keister for sure. I got one for use in the deer blind for my kid a yr ago, works awesome in that setting, stable and height is almost infinite for both short & tall folks..

Alas :-\ , the only thing smoked off it so far is the massive urban leapus...

But like Scott said, Awesome ingenuity Al with the bungie cord, gonna have to try that...

I've tried just about everything and finally settled on a pair of shooting sticks - home made because I just couldn' find any commerical ones that met my requirements.

I used 1/2" diameter solid aluminum rod the ends covered with 12" of heater hose. I bound the sticks together with 1" industrial grade velcro. I use a 43" overall length to allow me to shoot off a lightweight sportmans chair while sitting.

The sticks are very stable and do not flex under recoil. They are light weight and easily carried in the field. I like to stalk and this system allows me to quickly adjust the height by simply changing the angle of the sticks. There's no legs to fumble with trying to adjust so I can quickly get on target and shoot.

I can shoot extremely accurately with this system sitting on a light weight sportmans chair that I carry in the field with me.

It has a distinct advantage over bipods since I have a considerable better field of view allowing more shot opporunties. I don't like the commerical tripod since there are too many adjustments to make that don't work for me on the stalk - fine if you're sitting in one place for a long time but I like to move around.

Scott,

HELLOFABUCK!!!

K22,

My only use is for calling coyotes, static position.

I did build some sticks from fiberglass electric fence posts covered in clear vinyl and painted white. Didn't care for them. I'm in love with the smooth swivel feature of the tripod.

Rod and all,

New update:

After using the bungee cord for the last several days, I had another brainstorm. I ended up cutting two wedges of ethafoam from an old broadhead target, and black taping them on both sides of the "USR" rest for a better fit on both sides of the stock, and holds the gun snugly enough that I don't have to use a bungee. I've only used it once last night, but it looks like a winner so far.

I like that idea. When the elec tape gets all brittle on ya, stop at fleet farm or tractor supply and get a roll of vetranarian tape or horse tape to wrap that foam in...

Smoke one last night?

I've been using the mcnett camo wrap for stuff like this where you put the electrical tape. It's a little tacky which could be good or bad. I'm still using the tall Harris, but I might have to try one of these. Thanks for sharing.

Funny you brought that up. I did buy the vet tape last year for the white factor, but took it back w/o using it.
