My new biuld

Hey folks I hope this is in the right spot. What is YALLS opinion for the best short action long range cartridge. I have a stevens 200 sa in .22-250. I want a different caliber for hunting but I want the absolute best for accuracy and overall performance at the farthest ranges. I would like to keep the barrel short around 20" but if it needs to be longer that's fine also. Let's hear the opinions. Thanks.

That 20" barrel limit is going to really hamper the velocity you need for long range shooting, especially for hunting! Flat shooting cartridges sure help take the guess work out of "estimating" ranges past 300 yards! Get less than a bango string like trajectory and hitting anything small, like Prairie Dogs, become nigh on to impossible>>especially on the first shot or two!

Your 22.250 with 50 or 55gr pills with a 26" barrel will get you "out yonder"!

How far do you plan to shoot? Lots of good calibers but 20 inches is cutting it short for long range as alot will shine better with a longer barrel.

Story of my life. You have the right caliber but your barrel is short. You already have the dies for the .22-250, just go with a longer barrel.

I would do a 6BR With an 8 twist. When you go for distance you can't beat the heavier bullets of a 6 MM verses 22. Less wind drift and more energy. You can shoot to 1000 yards with a 6 BR accurately and it would be hard to do in a 22-250 especially if you have any wind. If hunting game like deer or antelope I would want the added energy. I would also go a little longer on the barrel maybe 24 inches. Matt

Plus 1 If you don't mind wearing hearing protection Put a brake on it. Then you can see the impacts. Better yet put a brake with a tuner on it . Bostrom gun smith sell them. Larry

That would make the barrel longer.

A 6BR, BRX, or Dasher would work well in a 20" barrel. Get a 1:8" twist barrel and shoot 105 gr. bullets.

Hey thanks guys. I already have a savage mod 10 in 22-250 and a stevens 200 in 223. The 223 has. 20" barrel. The 22-250 has a 24". Anyhow I had thought about the 7-08 because the variety of choices for the 7mm but if I can go with a 24-26" barrel in a 6mm br that would be great. Another thing is can I buy factory ammo for that caliber. I don't mind reloading but my setup is very slow and it frustrate me greatly so if I could just buy the ammo that would be better. I like to shoot too much and reloading takes so long I don't want to shoot my reloads. As far as what I'm hunting, nothing bigger than deer and more than likely nothing farther than 300yds unless is a coyote but on rainy days the 22-250 does not give me the blood trail I like. So that is the big reason for the larger caliber. As far as distance goes, how about as far as possible. Probably just on non living targets at long range but I think it would be fun to have the capabilities to hit targets at very long ranges. Thanks for the suggestions

24 inch barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor seems as good as option as possible, factory ammo since you are not inclined to reload too much, accurate round, viable on deer within your distances.

This would be my vote. I have not heard anyone complaining about the 6.5 Creedmoor.

As to your reloading you might want to start a new thread on it but no one ever said you have to do all the steps in rapid succession. Take an hour do one step then a few days later work some more. Even working just 20 casings then stopping is better than not working them. Just a few ideas.

Haha yeah I know I could do the reloading in stages I just would
Like it if it was quicker. Anyhow back to the creedmore, can I have the same distance with it as I could the 7-08.

I have shot a lot of 22 caliber rifles the last few years. Just got into a 6XC, on a windy day where I wouldn't shoot for groups with a 222,223,22-250 ackley, my 6XC will hold less then 3/4" at 200. The 223 and 22-250 ackley both shoot very good, but not so much at 200 in windy conditions. The 6 is nice because the high B.C. and the fact that it has bullets heavy enough for deer and light enough for vermin. Also the 6's are reasonable to load for, mild recoil, and easy enough to find components for.

Hey folks thanks for all the suggestions. I've done as much research as I can and I think I've narrowed it down to 2. The 6.5 creed moor and the 6mmbr. Now I will tell you I know absolutely nothing about these two. Which is the best choice. I planned on this gun being a dedicated deer rifle for ranges out to 300 yds. I have now decided it shall be that plus a fun gun out to 1000yds. I mean why not. So I would like to not break the bank with this. I have found factory ammo for both and barrels for both but I know not what twist or length to get. I do know I want a heavier barrel over a sporter. Oh this gun is a repeater so that is also a factor. I had read before that the 6br with its straight case walls was not good at functioning from a magazine. Like I said I know nothing about them so I hope yall can educate me and help me make the right choice. Thanks.
