My Gap 7wsm 1400 yards "Video"

Hey got my camera out the other day and did some shooting. A lot of people are liking the video so thought I would share it you with you guys. This is a place I found on the south side of Utah lake to go shoot. It's makes for a good spot as you can go back up to around 1900 yards. Shooting over the canyon makes it tricky on windy days. I got lucky and the wind was not to bad on this day.

I've wondered if it's possible to jazz up a 7MM WSM with a 180 VLD to 3100+ FPS with a 29 or 30" barrel and R17.

My 26 inch gives me 3050 with the 180's and 60 grains of Re17. BUT....I don't get the accuracy that I get from H1000, which gives me 2950.

3100 should be easily doable, but I just can't find the accuracy with it.

That's how I felt on speed. Yeah you can go faster, but what are you really gaining in doing so. Less barrel life. My accuracy is so good with H1000 2950fps. that I would rather give up a little speed for accuracy. That's just me.

I agree on the speed, I'm coming around on slowing things down for better accuracy. I was mostly just curious what the real limit of the straight 7WSM with a 180 was.

Thanks all,

Wayne

2950 seems to be almost optimal for the 7mm WSM and the 180 Bergers. I'm trying the new Hybrids, haven't quite got them to group as tight as the VLD's.

They are supposedly less sensitive to exact placement vs. the lands, but so far, not perfect for me!

Speed makes a difference, though, at 1000 yards. 100 FPS makes a big difference in drop and drift.

What seating depth are you trying those Hybrids at. I Just got me 400 of them coming to give a try. Any starting point or tips would help.

I agree 100Fps does make a difference. For me to get that extra speed it just to hard on the barrel and brass. I think to get another 25-50fps is more doable.

I've only tried them at 16 and 12 thousandths off the lands. I'm going to move to 8 and 4 next go around. Then if I don't get what I want, I'll go to touching. I hoped that I could keep them out a ways, and then maybe bump the load a bit or use Re17 to get a little more speed.

I had very good results on the Hybrids at 0.015" of the lands based on Bryan Litz's advice.

I tried 0.010 jam, touch, 0.015" jump, 0.030"jump, 0.050" jump.

I got bugholes at the 0.015" and shotgun (1-2 MOA @ 100yd) with the rest.

..good video...seen it on the Hide...

..have you tried 1,760 yards yet?

...at our range we have a 12" x 12" steel target at 1 mile.... 8) 8)

Hi Skyking

Great video!
I had the opportunity to shoot my 7/300wsm at 1580 yards on Friday, awesome, the .338 next to me could not hit the figure. 11, I shot my f class rig and have the urge for a tactical set up, my question is how did you (or George) get the 180 Bergers to work in a short action from the mag, I understood that it was difficult to have the longer vld bullet in S/a setup, I already have two stocks for a rem/surgeon derivative so would be very interested.

Got some Hybrid 180's I will keep you posted on how they shoot.

All testing done at 200 yards, 64 grains H1000, 1000 feet of elevation, 88 degrees.

I had poor results at touching, .004, .008, .012, .016, and .020 off. Then I had a breakthrough after talking with Bryan Litz, who suggested most people did well at .030-.060 off. At .030 I had 4 touching and 1 flyer, which I attributed to shooter error, but they were were vertically strung, like beads. .040, .050 were useless, then .060 and everything fell together. 3 shots in a very tight cloverleaf, and 2 that weren't quite touching but still all less than .75 inches to the group.

I'm going to play a little with powder charge and work from there. I only loaded 5 at each length, so I'll now have a little bit of playing to get the best charge.

Hello SkyKing

I would also like to hear your comments regarding the 180s in a short action. Also any info on the reamer used for you chamber. :)

Scott
