Thanks Ken! Yeah I plan to try 200 yards next go around.Hey Jerry. Glad you had a great time. Next time hopefully the weather will be nicer and you can try out 200 yards.
I have always had an interest in BR whether that was short range or long range and F-Class as well. I have been wanting to go try out FTR and I’m actually building a rifle for that, but haven’t shot any matches yet. Ken invited me to this match in Holton and offered me to use all of his stuff and I was excited to go and I had no reason not to try it out. I’m really happy I got this opportunity because I learned how much I enjoy benchrest!Great shooting. How long had you been considering shooting in your first match?
Btw, there is a chance that you are still right in the edge of the rabbit hole. No worries. Jump in with both feet. It’s a smooth fall with no bottom.
Did you find anything that was rough for your first time....I have always had an interest in BR whether that was short range or long range and F-Class as well. Other than not being as fast and fluent at loading and shooting as experienced shooters, I found myself shooting a lot of sighters. I shot probably 4-6 sighters every match. I would start off shooting 2 sighters while watching conditions, if they both touched I’d move to the score target and try and get off 1-3 shots before the conditions changed. Like I mentioned, I’m not as smooth and fast as experienced guys, so I struggled to rip off 5 record shots while a condition held. I also was afraid to lose a shot in the wind and I didn’t know what to expect for wind drift with a 6PPC with 68gr bullets. I have never shot groups at close range using anything more than a piece of surveyors tape on the target frame at 100 or 200 yards. I certainly never have tried it with a PPC while attempting to put 5 shots into one hole. When I saw the conditions change, I’d stop. I wasn’t afraid to wait it out, and when my condition came back I’d shoot another 1-2 sighters to make dang sure I didn’t fling a shot. If things were good, I’d move back to my record target and finish off my group. By the time I got to the HV part of the match, I began experimenting with running all 5 record shots and holding for the conditions. I would typically lose a bullet in the wind, but I’d adjust for it and put the next ones back in the group. I didnt really like this approach, so I feel moving forward I should practice getting smoother and quicker at loading and shooting, but then wait for the conditions and finish the group without bouncing back and forth on the sighter because of my lack of confidence. I really just didn’t want to make a stupid mistake and get burned by the wind, so that’s why I would shoot sighters to test what I thought I saw with the conditions. Sorry for the long winded response, but I figured that would sum up my struggles from my first match.Did you find anything that was rough for your first time....
I know you shot well so apparently you didn't have difficulty In reading wind or fighting mirage....
I should have a rifle to use here soon!Congrats! On the search for components or a rifle now?
