I just started back at calling at night. D740 gen 3 scope, LR IR, MMR AR15, 50g vmax load. Flir ps32.
1st set about 9pm had a pair that came in fast and curved into a rut then stayed at 300 yards out for the next 35 min, never came out of the tall grass to shoot, just see it in the thermals moving around a crest just a tad to far out and way to low.
Next set had 7 coyotes and 1 badger & 6 antelope. All stayed at 400+ yards out, then 1 young mangy male came in at a trot after sitting w/2 others across the 2track at 400 yards for 20 min. I dropped it at 80 yards, the other 2 just stayed out there. About another 20 min later the big raunchy male decided to come in. I shot it at 135 yards directly in line w/the young one. We watched several others come out of the gullies across the roads and mouse around a p-dog field and ignored the calls. A badger shows up at 70 yards and we left it since we still had 3 coyotes in our thermals.
I decided to stalk the 2 across the road & make it within 100yds as one mosied around to where I was waiting & the other moves into the tall grass then is gone.
I am pulling the trigger and hear pop---pop the silenced AR15 my pal is shooting & at another one that came blasting in from his side and mine takes a full jump as I shoot and I hit it in the rear leg and it spins and is gone. I see it in the thermal at 600 yards limping into the gullies.
We had in a total of 15 coyotes by daylight 8am.
Our last set about 8am we are set on a hillside looking over cattle and see 2 coyotes at about 900 yards out. They make a play towards us, then one breaks into a full trot to the set and my pal drops it at 125 yards the other splits & we see it at about 1/3 mile off mousing so we put the stalk on it.
We have changed to our day guns before this set.
We stalk into the washout and are below it. we split sides of the 100' wide runoff spot. I stay in the washout on the close side so it fails to see me, my pal is blowing his mouth call to hold it around.
I make it 400 yards and start my climb out of the area and see it has split and is now up a wide gully, I drop and put a round into it at about 350 yards and as cows come toward it from a perfect side shot it steps and my bullet splats that spot...Its full afterburner over the hills
Long night and worn out I am.
