my cz550 6mmbr

hi,from WY. last year i shoot the barrel out of my cz 550 22-250 popping patch poodles and i decided to go with the 6br. i only got 800-1000 rounds out of that fact. barrel and i guess thats all you can expect from 3700+ vel. i havent got my gun back yet due to x-mas shipping but hoping my gunsmith is done this week. i ordered a hart cro-mo barrel in 1-12 twist not really knowing the benifits of a 1-8,till now) and i hope i still get what i wanted- 400+yards in WY. wind . couldnt find any lapua brass so i got norma and payed out the #!$% for it. i put 29 grns. varget in em with a 75 gr.v-max seated out far till i know my col to be ready for bugs burger and yote stew. is it wourth trying 87 v-max or should i save the effert? i hear it bolth ways...i want to keep vel. below 3000 but shoot a good b.c. bullet in a 1-12 twist. any advice would help

I don't know if you can change your order, but the 1:12 does limit you. With a 1:10 you can shoot the BIB 95s which are super-accurate. I think the V-max 87s will be marginal in the 1:12.

Berger makes some really good bullets. With a 1:10 you can shoot the Berger 90gr and Lapua 90gr boat-tails which are both excellent with a decent BC. You can even buy loaded ammo with the Lapua 90s.

If you're stuck with the 1:12 I would try the Scenar 77gr flat-base, the Fowler 80s, Berger 80s, and the Sierra 75gr hollowpoint Varminter.

You'll want to hot up your load somewhat. Check out the loads on our varmint page: http://www.6mmbr.com/varmintloads.html

its too late to change my order, good news is i will have my gun in the next week . i have been waiting three months for it. this whole project started as a simple rechaimber for my 22-250 till my gunsmith discovered 2`` of my bore was gone. i brought the gun to him three months prior to see why it wouldnt shoot and discovered it had excess free bore and i couldnt seat bullets out far enouph to get near the lands, expains why i could never find the lands), also, i had throght damage. he said to keep my vel. under 3200 and it might last, it didnt. i only got about 350 rounds down her and she pooped the bed. i wonder if the free bore had something to do with why the barrel shot out so quick, i wish i thought sooner and i could of saved it. by the way, 3200 fps sucks in a 22-250! i plan to use this rifle on varmit shootting mostly due to the fact that i cant find any brenchrest comp. in WY. if i like this round enouph, think i will)i will get a custom built with 1-8 cause there is long range comp. out here. just how far can i SHOOT these 70-80 pills and get with in a minute of p. dog????? cant wait to see.:comp:

well, i get her back yesterday and im really happy with the work my gunsmith did. he broke the barrel in for me fireing 30 test shots, cleaning the bore every shot. he told me he got an average group of .650 @150yrds. guess that aint bad for shooting down a wet barrel. got the action blueprinted, bolt rebuilt, and a 26`` douglas match barrel in 1-12. i got out to shoot at the range yesterday and that wind was getin-her.i still got set up and shoot between gusts. she really did not like the loads i made for her, i wanted to start at a med. vel. and it kicked my but. they shot 1.+ and i was a little mad:confused:you were right when you siad i need to hot them up! my load was 28.8 varget, 450 cci primer, 75 molly v-max, norma case & imr 3031 26.6-same. something wasnt right but i`ll try some other, hoter loads and see what she does.

i found what the problem was- my scope mount is broken. when i went to try a different scope and better loads it shot better put still not good enough, i could`nt move my reticle down far enough to sight in at 200 yrds-??? i took the scope off and mounts and found a broken peice inside. this is the second time it`s happend, this time i`ll get the CZ mounts and not the cheaper ones- does anybody have any output on douglas barrels? it`s what i got now and so far i`ve read different storys about them.

aint anybody reading the varmit forums anymore or what? no new posts for awhile so i guess i`ll break the stupid ice, if there`s any were you are ). it`s been warm & dry out here in WY almost all winter so far and i`m starting to see some prarie poodles pop up here and there. i`ve been out breaking in my new barrel and i`m starting to REALLY like it, i can hit the same spot on a rock out past 300yrds and honestly, i know this gun can shoot better than me. next time i go out it`s to the rat towns i go...what i`m really happy about is i got a 1:10" barrel, i think there was some confusion somewere cause my gunsmith ordered me a 1:12 and thats what he told me he put on but i tested it with my cleaning rod and it turns 1 in 10. i asked for one after he ordered it but i didnt want to wait any more weeks to get her back so i was gona live with it. cant wait to get some 80+ bullets to see what she can really do, i`m shooting sub .5 @ 100yrds with the 75 v-max & 30.5 varget. i`m glad i tried the 6br, dont think i could of found a better round for shootin varmits.:thumb:

So it's a 1:10? That's cool--give you a lot more flexibility. You can shoot everything from 45-95 grains, except the BIB 95s which need a 1:9" normally). There are so many great bullets to try, but you probably should try some of the BIB 95s if you want to check out the pure accuracy at long range. Run them with a stout load.

Two other powders you may want to try are VV N135 for the 70-80 grainers and RL 15 for the BIB 95s. Recent tests are showing us that RL 15 may give you 30-40 fps more than Varget at the same pressure levels.

thanks moderator, i got to tell old dennis, my gunsmith, that someone goofed up.;). what powder charge should i start with using R-15, can i try it with 87 v-max? its one of about the six different powders i got left over from my 22-250 loadings and i`d like to use it up. how does that VV powder shoot in the summer, i`ve tried other ball powders and when it`s HOT they dont do good on the presure thing. by the way, will 4064 work in my 6br?

VV N135 is an extruded powder, but the sticks are pretty short. I rate it as "pretty good" in terms of temp insensitivity, though not as good as the Hodgdon extreme powders.

I think RL 15 will be a little slow for the lighter bullets but it should work well with the 87gr V-Max and the BIB 95s if you try that. Can't really recommend how much as I don't your throat length and seating depth and actual case capacity. I would start at 30.5 grains and work up. You'll probably end up around 32+ grains.

were can i buy soom BIBS 95`s at, i dont have any acounts with anybody and i need a good sorce of good bullets. i seat my 75 v-max at 2.237 off the lands about .008. got plenty of space for bigger bullets. got to go.

well... i busted my first batch of pasture poodles the other day and i got to say the 6br kicked there butt! i got a few shots of at about 200yrds and she deliverded well. the 75gr v-max gave the best peformance. after shootting the barrel out of my 22-250 i wanted a acurate round that would be better on barrel life but have the power to shoot long range so i tried the 6br in my CZ 550 varmit and i got to say i`m glad i did. shootting the 87gr v-max across a very wide draw, over 1000 yrds), i about started to cry when i shot a 1ft wide piece of brush over and over, shootting pron i saw every shot hit through my burris 4.5-14 on 8x. i really wish there was some sort of benchrest comp. in wyoming but there`s PLENTY of varmits and that makes this gun worth every bit of $$$ i payed for it!
