My 6BR Norma Ladder Test R5 Rifle

I have not tried them with varget yet.. I will have to moly some to see how it will work.. If I am going to shoot them with varget.. then it will have to be moly'd.

Oh and speaking of hot.. the lighter loads with that 108BT were horrible.. also.. the bullets were slightly jammed into the lands.. and I was in the shade.. I am going to back them out of the lands a little .. there is a 3x600 soon.. I will try them then..

Your load of Berger 108's and 30.5g RL-15 is probably very hot.

My load was naked Berger 108's, 30.0g RL-15,Fed 205M's,Norma Brass. On a hot day during a prolonged match, The bolt lift became very hard and I even poped a primer. I wiped out about 100 pieces of brass at that match. IMHO RL-15 is to "peaky" in 6BR with heavy bullets and Varget will serve you better in the long run.

Shot it today.. out in the sun all day.. it is 85 degrees.. just got in from the range.. shot the 108BT's with 30.5 grs of RL-15.. score at 600.. 99-4.. not bad.. considering I was testing .. the 9 was the first shot for score and was still trying to get a zero on the gun.. after that.. I left it alone and shot with out moving the sights.. I had a minute right on the sight from MZ. Extraction was fine.

Excellent! Your velocity should be 2900+, with 30.0g RL-15 I was at 2875fps. I assume your using Laupa Brass. Nice R5 - I love mine.

Mike,

Your correct in saying that I am using Lapua Brass.. I checked the brass after I got home from work this morning. The brass has been fire-formed.. loaded round at the base of the case is .469, checked a fired case,30.5grs of RL-15) and it was .469. The chamber in the rifle is such that when using my Redding resizing die only pushes the shoulder back .001, to which I am very happy about! And that is with the die all the way down.

I have become to believe that this rifle only likes hot loads.. or at least it seems to be that way.. but that 30.5 load is not hot.. I am wondering now if 30.6 would hold a little tighter.. when I was shooting those groups.. as I was shooting each progressively hotter load.. the groups tightened up.. I had only loaded up to 30.5.. but I am going to try 30.6 maybe even 30.7.

Re HOT loads--

Different barrels have different internal dimensions and friction characteristics. Also, a 6BR chamber with a short throat will show pressure at a lower powder charge than if there is a very long throat.

What all this means is that some guns can simply shoot more powder than others. In my PacNor with a .236 bore and .080 freebore, 30.5 Reloder 15 is MAX for the Berger 105, uncoated. But I know other guys who are running 31.0+, and other guys who are maxed at 30.2 -- so you really have to do your own determinations.

Of course, the bullets make a difference too. A 107 Sierra ain't the same as a 105 Scenar or 108 Berger--you need to adjust your load for each.

The thing is, you may be useing more powder but is the projectile going any faster.
Without a Chrono you realy are wandering around in the dark hoping to find the correct load. Shooting over a good chrono you can increase your loads and watch the SD reduce then start to increase again.
I start with projectile in the lands and once i have the SD down in single figures i only vary the load 1 tenth at a time then when you think you have the best just vary the seating but if you get very low SD i would be leaving it alone.
Someone said earlier about different loads for different ranges, distances) WHY?? If it is accurate at 100-200-300yards why wouldn`t it be accurate at 500-600-1000 yards.
I have only been playing with the longer ranges for a few years now and mainly with my POPGUN 30BR but it shoots under 2 inch at 500m and 600 yards and can also reach the target clean at 1000 just need some good weather so i can get all my shots on target this year but even the big guns were loosing shots last year.
I reckon if your rifle is accurate and you read the conditions correctly you can score well Reading the conditions over long range i find is the hardest.

If you ask this question.. then you do not understand Cross The Course Highpower.. Due to rapid fire stages.. you don't really want to be shooting the strongest load, so it is good to find a load that shoots well with lest recoil so that you may be able to recover back on target faster. Gas guns make this pretty much easier.. but if you are shooting a bolt gun.. well reduced recoil is a large factor for recovery and getting the next round in and back on the target.. you have 60 seconds in sitting rapids to get 10 rounds into the center of the target. Sitting rapids starts with the shooter standing and when the targets begin to move.. the shooter may return to sitting. Service rifles shoot 2 and 8 and match rifles shoot 5 and 5.

300 yard prone rapids is in 70 seconds from standing to prone. Here you want either to use the same load that you used at 200 or if you have a good shooting middle load.. this will help with the wind, and being in prone, one is able to deal with a little more recoil..

600 yards is prone slow fire..

I am not looking for speed per say, but groups.. what groups the best.. I don't really care how fast it is going, as long as it groups consistantly, the reaction to the load by the wind is something that I will learn with shooting that particular load that the prescibed distance.

I have a chrono.. but I don't check speeds till I am satisfied that I have a load that is working well with what I am doing.. then I will go back and check the speed.. only so that I may look up wind deflections and come-ups.
