my 22 BRX is no longer a virgin

yes it's true. my 22 BRX was nonlethal until yesterday. the landowner called and told me the hay was cut and baled and the gate was open and the dirt road over the creek was graded! you can't ask for anything more! i cut my afternoon short and got there mid afternoon so as to get set up under a tree on the hill that overlooks the field...150 yds to the ditch on the left and 450 yds to the end of the field. in no time there it was, grazing on the green stubble at 370 yds. the wind was not nice and i had no idea how much drift to expect from the 69 gr barnes matchburner going 3400fps. with the nightforce np2DD dot held to the tailend of the horizontal ghog, i sent the 69gr and it was blown too far to the left! now i know. waited a few and no 2 ventures out to nibble. 329 yards this time and horizontal...best position for wind blown shots. put the dot just back of rear and sent it....WHAAAACCCKKK! DRT! rolled over without even the tail salute. the wind got worse so i drove to the ghog and discovered i had only about 1 in of ghog to spare...the bullet was blown to his ear! in one and out the other, leaving a drop of orangish/red blood to identify the wounds. sorry i can't post photos yet since i am a senior citizen and haven't figured how to do such...have a friend who will help me and if i can do it, i have some really interesting shots to share...like the 13 lb ghog shot in the back standing. he fell forward with a loop of small intestine in his mouth! rain today but i'll go back later and expect to get one bigger than this last one who weighed 10 lb 5 0z.

Don't know where you are, but you sure grow them big there! Good shooting by the way. Can't wait for the pics!! :P

she's at it again...showed her stuff yesterday at 200 yds. the ghog was walking and turning and wouldn't stay still. finally stopped, scratched and gave us a profile...target engaged, target acquired, 69 gr barnes matchburner, that i hollowpointed, sent...WHHAAACCCCKKKK! not even a quiver, jump or tail salute! DRT! sorry i can't post photo yet, but the barnes went exactly where the dot of my nightforce np-dd retical told it to go. not a drop of blood and no exit wound! the bullet exploded inside and about 30 gr of it lodged under the farside skin...mostly just peeled back jacket base and a hint of lead. how hot is a bullet at this range? the edges of the entrance wound were cauterized crusty...seen this many times. in spite of her promiscuous behavior, i think i'll keep her.

she "put out" again yesterday. where did i go wrong? she's just doing what comes natural for her. spent 4 hours on a hillside and she was getting a roving eye. finally what looked like a short fencepost thru the weeds suddenly moved! pig alert! 326 yds with very little wind. only 18 power on my nightforce 8-32 np2-dd, dot on chest and sent it. took awhile but then the WHHHACCKK! again, not a quiver or tail wag...just dead. the big belly suggested the 10lb 9 0z weight of this ole male. the hollowpointed 69 gr barnes match burner did not exit and there was no blood! total dispersion of energy in the animal. in spite of her aggressive and promiscuous behavior, i think i'll keep hanging out with her especially since my BIG guns(6-284, 6x47 lapua and 243 ackley) are starting to take notice. i think i saw the 6.5-284 glancing over his sightron 8-32 just last night. do i sense some jealousy? ok, they both can go out the next time.

What did you guy`s use for a FF load with your BRX????

Thorbird,

What weight bullets are you using in yours???

Phil.

Don't be too hard on the little Whore! We like the ones that put out! We are not supposed to :-* and tell but I'm glad you did! ;)

i ff all cases with cow and pistol powder...for the 22 BRX i used hogdens clays 7.8 gr and a small pistol magnum primer, cow to mid neck and fill with lanolin. also, false shoulder after turning neck about 2/3 down as a 6mm, using a .250 neck bushing to create the false shoulder...my chamber neck is .251 and the redding bushings always seem to neck about .005 smaller than their value. i've posted before that i insert my gun's muzzel into a bale of fireresistent attic insulation and WHUUMMPPP. very quiet and i do this in my shop. have to blow the chamber every so often since some cow gets in the chamber and will indent a case. my 9 twist seems to really like the 69 gr barnes matchburners. i tried 60- 80 gr bullets and settled on what works. also tried several powders (varget, vvi40 vvi50 vv540 vv550 rel17, h380). the es velocities seem to be the smallest with varget. neck tension.0015 and seat .020 thou into lands...some mild throat erosion after 300 rounds but shoots just fine. coated the bore with dynamic finishes ceramic based bore coating product and, as advertised, reduced cleaning time to a fraction of the time previously required. i'm thinking about getting the girl a sister in 12 twist and groom her to shoot 60 gr at 3700 fps...

misprint or a brainf--t. sorry. she popped another 10+ lb pig on sat. 220 yds, profile and hit just a little low on left chest...blew chest out including breastbone, some ribs and a lot of chest contents...probably lost 4+oz of weight. we have a monthly contest in our varmint hunter's club and 10 lb ghogs in june are usually winners...add to this one a 11lb 5oz female taken earlier in the day and i will probably take june.

an update on load development for those shooting a 22 BRX: barrel is a 9 twist kreiger and i decided to try heavier bullets. the 73 gr bergers are now shooting 3 shot groups in the ZEROS! slowed the powder a bit...vihtavouri 540 33.4-33.8 gr with bullet .020 into the lands and the best measured a tiney .042 in!!! velocity is 3300+fps and primer pockets are staying tight. chamber is .251 in so i turn necks as a 6mm, then neck down in two stages and loaded neck measures .248in. after 4-6 firings some necks are thickening as the brass flows and i got pressure problems and accuracy went away...measured necks and they were .2495-.250 and i believe there isn't enough clearance, so i trimmed them (length and thickness of necks) and loaded neck was back to .2475-.248 and accuracy returned. even though a fast twist barrel will shoot lighter bullets, i'm starting to suspect a fast twist does it's best with heavier bullets and slow twist give best results with a lighter one. must have a lot to do with ALL variables coming into a harmonious blending. i have some 75 gr berger vlds and will try them, but it's hard to pass over the 73s printing in the zeros repeatedly.

That is awesome! I can't help but think about what kind of bbl life the 22BRX would have. I have plans for a 22BR using the 90's, but I have also thought about doing a BR-DX as well. My mind is not totally made up yet. I have also thought about taking the Hagar brass and necking it down to 22 cal and using that. Though, it would require having a bolt opened up just a tad to accept the Hagar brass.

a problem with a brdx is dies. my redding 6br dies work with the 22 brx since shoulder is the same. barrel life is an issue and i can already see some firecraking. i may be the problem, but i am not overly impressed with my 22 brx as compared to my 22 br. the latter, a 12 twist, will shoot one hole all day long with just about any bullet tried. i'm hoping these heavier bullets in the brx will stay consistent. also wonder if a slower twist might not work better. looking for that majic combination is always fun, esp if you find it.

my 22 BRX is 28 in and i get 3400 fps with 69 gr bullets and 3350fps with the 73s. i am st the upper limit and have primer pockets to show for it. certainly could back off, but the reason for going from a 22 BR to the BRX is to increase case capacity, thus powder and speed. you don't always get a lot of increase speed with a larger case and charge, but certainly get more barrel damage. if accuracy improves or stays the same with increase velocity, then i'm happy. the 6 BRX and DASHER seem to do all the above nicely and i was hoping the 22 BRX would do the same. looks like the 73s may be the ticket...i'll see. a slower twist with lighter bullets might be the magic combination...great speed, perfect accuracy, and minimal barrel wear. i'm obviously toying with this idea as my next project, but can't forget the idea of a 20 BR with berger 55s...so many choices and so little time left.
