Muzzle Loader Question

I want to purchase a muzzle loader but have no idea about which is a good rifle to purchase.
Could you guys give me some ideas what is a good unit to buy and anything else I need.

Would think that most of my shots would be at 100yds for deer.

Need more info.

Here in PA, "muzzleloader" traditionally means patched round ball in a flintlock, with no scope.

Other places percussion is OK.

Still others allow inlines with scopes.

Get a Savage ML-2 muzzle loader, u can shoot smokeless powder and it shoot as good if not better that some hunting rifles! That's the easiest way to go.

I actually have one, though it is only legal for a week of early muzzleloader here (which I don't hunt).

I picked it up with hopes of drawing a Utah tag, that didn't materialize, so it pretty much sits here, waiting.

Also, I do believe that Savage has discontinued this model, so it may be a "used market" only if that's what somebody wants.

It's the stainless model in the camo synthetic stock, and not for sale. :-X

It comes down to how much $$ do you want to spend. If you're on a budget, a blister pack with everything you need but powder & primers at wallyworld, cabelas or other big box store. I've found that even the cheapo setups are more than adequate for 100 yds. I'd say the Savage smokeless route is more if you're in to shooting long range and are willing to spend twice the money.

Coldbore, check the latest regs. You can use any muzzleloader during the regular deer and bear seasons. .44 or larger. Flintlocks are restricted to the specific flintlock extended season. Different WMUs have different regs. I hunt 5C and 5B and MLs, slug and buckshot only, no centerfires. I use a Savage custom .45 shooting .40 SSTs, sabots and H4198. Savage discontinued them but parts are available to do an easy conversion of a savage centerfire action to a smokeless.

I guess I was thinking more narrowly, to the actual muzzleloader season, when dealing with the original question.

I'm in a rifle WMU, so no need to use the "modern" muzzleloader outside of that early season. Of course that season coincides with archery season, and I'd much rather use my bow, so the inline just sits, in hopes of some day drawing that Utah tag where I'd need a bit more than my flintlock Hawken can offer. 8)

We've had some great times in the late season, putting on drives with our flintlock muzzleloaders. Don't kill many deer that way, but we sure have fun. ;D

A friend of mine has one. He shoots PowerBelts, two Triple Seven 50gr equivalents, with Triple Seven primers and get's acceptable minute of deer accuracy with them. Good Hunting!

For typical 100 yard whitetail hunting, you're set.

A number of years ago I bought a Thompson-Center Renegade in .54 caliber. It is a replica of an 1800's rifle and is very well built. I soon found that 430gn Maxi Balls were the projectile of choice and at 1500 fps with 125gn of FFF black powder (or smokeless Pyrodex) it not only had plenty of knock down energy, but it was a tack driver at 100 yds!

When hunting , I carry the gun loaded and when I get in the jeep or in camp I simply remove the cap.

I wanted this gun to hunt with a Real muzzle loader, not a bolt action want-a-be. I subscribe to the "beware of the man that needs only one shot" state of mind but carry a pocket full of little tubes with a lubed Maxi Ball, load of powder and a cap for quick reloading.

If you are going to shoot black powder, do it right for some fun!

If that Traditions is an inline using 209 shotgun primers get yourself some Blackhorn 209 powder. Not cheap but you don't have to dump it every season as it is not hydroscopic. Cleans with hoppes #9 or equivalent and is very accurate in my Encore. Can't imagine going back to BP or other substitutes.

I bought a Knight Disc extreme when Knight first went out of business (actually I bought 3 for $200 each, new) and I love it. In fact, my daughter uses it now in regular season because she does not like a slug gun (where required). 50 caliber, Barnes EZ Spitzer, 250 grain, with 2 777 pellets and a 777 primer. At one hundred i have groups well under 1 1/2 inch. At 50 yards one after another in the same hole. Nice rifle, great price, no complaints. Now Knight makes a youth model, but the gun goes $400 plus.

If your going to the trouble to go muzzleloader hunting, I prefer to go traditional, Pennsyvania long rifle, 4' barrel, flintlock, and very accurate, kills deer well, .45 cal. very satisfying experience.
