Muzzle crown comparison

300 RUM

Gene Nowaczyk
Does anyone have info they would like to share on how different muzzle crowns effect accuracy? Does a 11 deg crown really help?
I re-crowned a barrel that had maybe 200 rounds through it, I went from a 90deg crown to a 11 deg crown and saw nothing change in the accuracy of the riffle. Is it just this barrel maybe or what? any input?

Thanks
Gene

I think you will find that as long as the crown is done well, different crown configurations (within reason) have no real differing effect on accuracy. If there was a design that was definitively more accurate than others, I guarantee you bench rest shooters would all be using it.

I have always been told the crown does not truly effect accuracy, and that the only thing that truly matters is that the bores exit itself is clean, the rest is just for looks.

I leave it up to the gunsmith that is barreling the action. The last four barrels, from four different 'smiths, were straight 11°, recessed 11°, straight 90° and recessed 90° with a polished angle at the rifling. They all shoot well. The straight 90° is on a .284 Shehane Krieger, Ø1.25 muzzle done by Lester Bruno. It does look a little funny but I have zero complaint about the way that rifle shoots.

It has been my understanding that the important thing is the crown being square with the bore and the riflling sharp. The resessed or a 11 degree crown simply protect the sharp riflling.

That is how I understand it also, I smith all my own stuff and I have built several around 8 rifles with simple 90deg crowns already that shoot a 1/2 MOA and some at 1/4 MOA using a break i.e. (3) of my AR-15's (1) AR-10.

Hell I've seen a botched crowning job by one of the local club guys where his tooling left massive chatter marks and he can out shout the prettiest crowns out there. I personally do not believe that a beautiful looking or even a clean crown effects the performance. It is more the bores exit condition that effects the performance.
How ever being new to smithing work I am always looking for more knowledge.

+1 Absolutely!! Concentricity is the key, everything else is purely preference.
One key feature of whatever crown is picked is enough recess for protection against slight bumps.
