Muzzle Brake Question

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
I am a user of muzzle brakes from the fine gentlemen @ Harrell's Precision. As such, I am used to having the brake finish bored .020" over the bullet diameter when installed on my rifles. I purchased a muzzleloader rifle recently and am researching muzzle brakes in order to put one on. I found a company that makes a brake that has the barrel end tapered down on the barrel end so aesthetically it will look like it belongs there. The issue I have is that the ID of the brake is bored .205" larger than the projectile I plan to shoot. I am making an assumption that this has been done to accommodate shooting Sabot bullets. I am not going to be shooting Sabot bullets. Will this large ID size drastically affect recoil reduction negatively? My problem with using a straight OD profile is that my barrel is .854 at the end and I am shooting a .501" bullet. That only leaves a wall thickness a little more than .175". What suggestions do you have? Thanks for your input.

What make is that one? I’ve installed a few of Harrells sabot brakes and there fit up is very tight from bore diameter as to work with sabots like .005 to .007 from memory. I’ve been looking at the T-Rex muzzleloader brake from LRcustoms its a side port. But I can’t get much info on his recommended bore diameter.

I’d guess it is bored over normal diameter to fit a powder funnel for the muzzleloader. Probably not super efficient.

The sabot will start to separate from the projectile as it leaves the muzzle, so allowance must be mage to prevent baffle strikes. If not shooting sabots, that sort clearance will definitely impact recoil reduction. In a multi-port brake the difference between 0.010" over and 0.030" is possibly measurable, but will have no practical impact. 0.204" over is cavernous and negates the function of the brake.

I use a brake that is pre-fit so I can install it on a threaded muzzle myself and it has 0.030" clearance to allow for tolerances. A brake installed by a gunsmith and reamed to be coaxial with the bore can be much tighter - 0.005-10" would be typical.

It is an Anarchy Outdoors muzzle brake. I got the dimensions from them prior to making a decision to purchase. I'm glad that I took the time to get the dimensions. I had suspected that bore diameters were oversized on some of these ready to install muzzleloader brakes. CVA told me that they did not recommend using sabot projectiles with their brakes. I want to thank all of you gentlemen for responding to my question.

So I just got a correction to the Anarchy Outdoors muzzle brake ID. I had requested additional information from their tech department regarding the effectiveness of the brake due to the whopping oversized ID. Their emails say it is illegal to share the contents of the email with third parties so I will leave out names. I do want to correct the information that I was first given and had posted on this thread. They shouldn't complain about that. Here is the corrected information:

I apologize, I don't think ________ quite understood what you were asking for. Our .50 Caliber Muzzleloader muzzle brake are bored out to .580". This is overbored compared to what we would bore a rifle muzzle brake to, however, too many people are using muzzleloader projectiles with plastic skirts on them. When over pressured, those plastic skirts can overexpand when leaving the barrel making them much larger than .50". So to make our muzzlebrakes compatible with all popular projectiles we bore them to .580". (See attached image). The recoil reduction is very significant and noticeable with these brakes. Also, we recommend a muzzleloader projectile without a plastic skirt on them. These are the ones that I personally use. https://www.anarchyoutdoors.com/thor-lightning-ballistic-tip-50-caliber/
