muzzle brake help?

I have a 26in Encore bbl that shoots to 1in@300 all day. I use it to shoot 600 and rifle sillouete, and hunting out west. I am thinking of putting a brake on it only to tame it on the bench to be able to follow my shot. I don,t want to srew up this bbl. I am worried that changing the harmonics will ruin the accuracy. Any thoughts from guys who have real appilcation and expieriance. Advice from you fellows helped me find the 2 loads that are the ones that shoot to 1in. THANKS

IF the brake is installed correctly with the bore IT should aid in accuracy, by reducing recoil & therefore allowing you to shoot with more confidence..

Yes it may help with accuracy due to less recoil and possible flinching. Although this is great, it may also change barrel harmonics because of the extra weight at the muzzle. The only way to find out would be to install a brake or have a weight made to simulate the brake and try it. It should be easy enough for someone to make a weight that will slip over the muzzle.

It's not the weight alone that changes the harmonics, it's the location of the weight on the barrel.

OP, go ahead and get a brake put on, if it doesn't shoot, face off .005" from end of brake and shoot again. Do this until it shoots.

If he doesnt have his own lathe I would think it would be expensive getting a gunsmith to take .005 off at a time. Couldnt you just adjust the powder charge til its back in the node, if the weight of the muzzle brake takes it out of the node. Could be easier and cheaper.

Belt sander works just as well.

I've got a .257AI Varmint weight BBL. (Krieger) It has a removeable brake w/ a screw on sleeve to shoot brakeless also. No attempt was made to make the sleeve the same weight as the break. I get NO difference in accy but a slight change in POI. Maybe a 1/4 inch @ 100 yds. A competent smith installed this & I'm very happy w/ the results. As a point of interest I also use a Magnetospeed crono. With approx same results when on or off the bbl. of this rifle.

Put a Harrel's muzzle brake on it. In my experience with 3 of them now, they always made my barrels even MORE accurate.

Thank you gentlemen I think I am going ot try one. I will look at the harrels and vais and some others that have been talked about

Harrel's works just as good as Vais, if not better, but only costs $30 ;)

You could also put a brake with a BOSS system on it. This would allow you to re-dial the harmonics if you are worried about that. Pretty easy to get on from Gunbroker.

Winchester invented it but Browning acquired it at some point.

280ai Do a search @ daily bulletin here. I used "bertalotto tests" as search criteria. Good info for your consideration. BTW I like the Harrels too. Best bang for the buck IMHO.......... But, BEWARE your fellow competitors might be a bit negative about the noticeable increase in noise levels created by the brake :o
