mrad and moa

Are the adjustments on a mrad scope the same as a moa scope?

No, mrad is broken up into 1/10 of a Mil. Each 1/10 mil click is roughly equal to 1/3 of inch at 100 yards. So where MOA is usually 1/4 inch per click at 100 yards, and you need 4 to move an inch; a MRAD scope only needs 3 clicks to move the same inch.

hunting and long range plinking. I have just seen a couple scopes with the mrad turrets and wondered what the difference was

Minute of Angle (MOA) and milliradian (mil or mrad) scopes differ in the way they measure length and distance. MOA scopes are typically in yards, while mrad are in meters. They MOA scope will have turret adjustments in 1/4 or 1/8 of a MOA (1.047" at 100 yards) while mrad scopes usually have 1/10 adjustments of a mil (3.6 inches at 100 yards).

Man this stuff is to confusing.
Not if you do everything in meters. Unless you're a math whiz or practice, converting back and forth in hunting situations without a ballistic calculator can be an exercise in frustration. For hunting I'd stick with something in MOA.

so instead of times by 4 its only times by 3?
Not quite. Mrad scopes are all the rage among tactical shooters, but only because they (claim) that 'fewer clicks' of the turret it possible to more quickly set elevation. Quite frankly, MOA is more precise (1/4 moa vs 1/10 mil), and the turret must turn exactly the same degrees to reach the desired elevation. I'm not trying to shave 1/60th of a second off my time while turning the turret.

To keep it in simple terms, yes. For example, at a 1000 yd match, one click on a MOA scope (with quarter inch clicks) will move your impact 2.5 inches. The same click on a MIL scope (with 1/10 mil clicks) will move your impact 3.6 inches.

Go onto you tube and search Ryan Kleckner. He has a great video explaining MIL. For that matter, he also has one on MOA.

It is not metric. It stands for miliradian. Not military nor metric.
One mil is 1/1000th of what you are using. One YARD at 1000 YARDS, or one METER at 1000 meters and so on.
i.e. At 100 METERS it is 10 centimeters or at 100 YARDS it is 3.6 inches.
Mil scopes are graduated in 1/10th of a mil. So one 'click' is worth .36 inches at one hundred yards.
I hope the above helps.
I was never sure why this seemed to become the norm in the USA with scopes.

gstaylorg....a picture is worth 1000 MRAD's! +1

And the last sentence within your diagram says it all!

To answer the question you asked, it can be either. You can buy a mil reticle with MOA turrets, a mil reticle with mil turrets, an MOA reticle with mil turrets, or an MOA reticle with MOA turrets.

My suggestion is not to mix them unless you like to do math.

I wonder what percentage of the people who have or are contemplating buying a scope that has either a reticle that has ranging and hold off markings in radians, and or scope turrets with milliradian divisions, could explain what a radian is, or how the calculation is done to range distance using those marks, or know that neither has anything to do with the metric system, or the military.

Jammer Six is correct with his "...not to mix them up". There is no reason to and plenty of reasons not to do so. Unless you enjoy math problems that may require instant answers.
Simply put keep the 'mils' with the 'mils' and the moa's with the moa's when buying a scope.
¼" MOA scope will the point of impact ¼" at 100 yards per one 'click'
.1 mil scope will move it .36 at 100 yards (which is a bit more than 1/3 of an inch) per one click.
