There is an old thread given new life last evening by Alex Wheeler with a picture of a 600 yard IBS target.
This tread has prompted some thought this morning. The scoring gang at Western Colorado has had the conversation at least a dozen times about moving backers at 600 at our range because of the very issue Alex points out in his post. Several of us shoot at the 100/200 yard range 1/4 mile down the road where we shoot NBRSA short range BR and have moving backers. This system is not all that costly in comparison to new rifles and the current cost of components. None of us want to DQ someone because they shot an itty bity group where all five holes cannot be identified.
At our short range club (Landsend Benchrest Shooters) we have a wire buried for the switch out to 100/200 and use a car battery at the yardage to run the electric motor that moves the backers, there is a counter weight on the other end of the system to keep the wire tight. Really a simple system of moving the target carriers.
So the question is, what is the best system for moving backers with todays technology?
Is there a better way?
Thanks

Moving backers at 1,000 yards???
So the groups just keep getting smaller and smaller every year. Sub 1" is sure to fall. Any predictions if we'll ever see moving backers in 1,000 yard bench-rest? They have been required in short range bench-rest for years to verify the number of shots in the group. Seems most 1,000 yard...
