Mount for BAR 300 win mag

I’ll preface this by saying I know nothing about BAR rifles nor Leupold scopes. My son-in-law has a BAR in 300 win mag with a Leupold scope and mounts. Apparently you put the rings in and turn them to align. I didn’t mount it, so I don’t know. It has some type of windage adjustment on the base. My brother has a REM 700 in 300 WM with the same set up but his rings are the “heavy duty” version without the windage gizmo. Son in law’s gun will not shoot a group to save my life. It will pattern 2 close (1”) then the 3rd will be 7” away. It shoots like the scope is loose but I’ve checked everything. So those in the know, what rings should we be looking for? Is the recoil too much for the “standard” bases? All mine are on pic rails. I found some EGW rails and have considered moving in that direction. Thoughts?

I'd be leery of the scope. Put a piece pf tape up against one of the rings and shoot a couple shots and see if it moves. Also flinchitis may be the problem. Is the barrel kept clean, no carbon ring? If the groups are that big and its scope movement you should be able to easily tell scope is/has moved. I'd start by removing the rings and be sure there were oil free along with scope tube, then remount being sure screws are properly torqued and retest. New gun old gun?

New gun, was a Christmas present. He’s had it a few years. Don’t think it’s flinching. It happens with both of us and it kicks less than my 284.

I have never been a fan of those Lupy mounts and would throw them in the trash faster than I am typing this. It is very likely the scope was damaged if it was used to twist in the front ring. Try a new mounting system and a different scope.

It’s likely a good scope and a bad QR mount. I had trouble with a leupold QR mount, although not the one you are talking about. Ammunition could cause your problems but it’s not likely.

I suspect the slots on the base are bigger than the ring attachment points. When you tighten everything down all the way it feels solid but under recoil it’s moving.

I recommend removing the scope and put the empty rings on the mount, then see if you can move the rings.

I swore off Leupold products. If you can get a refund then do it. If you can’t then exchange for traditional rings and a pic rail. I had a Leupold QD for a pic rail and the design was absolutely terrible. If you want a QD then buy a QD for a pic rail.

Thanks. I’ll move him to a pic rail.
Give us an update after the change. You are spot on because EGW is the way to go for a premium rail at a reasonable price. Best of luck.

P.S.
You might also check out TPS rings and in particular their TSR lineup. Premium rings that are held to 0.0004 of an inch tolerances and priced substantially less than Badger or Nightforce. Im sure EGW makes good rings but I’ve never tried their rings.
