Most Accurate AR-15

Saturday at my gun club we were shooting long range. I noticed several guys were using AR-15's and hitting small steel out to almost 500 yards. I understand finding the recipe your gun likes and I am willing to do my part. I just know some guns will never shoot MOA no matter what bullet manipulation. My question is if I wanted a very accurate AR out of the box (if possible), what would you recommend and why?
Thanks...

Lee Wells, Accurate and Reliable Rifle. His rifles shoot well under MOA.

Dpms sweet 16 or varmint. The Olympic k8 is a great rifle after a trigger swap. Most any of the predator configurations will shoot good. You don't need to go custom cost. Barrel and trigger is usually the two that I change and they are plenty accurate. I've got a bushmaster xm15 20" chrome lined rifle that shoots 3/4" constant and that's with wc842 and bolder seconds. (I am looking to trade it for a bolt 223 though)

Customs like the les Baers are very accurate out of box - but with A/R's, most heavy-barrelled 18" to 26" guns with good optics and trigger with a load tuned to the gun can shoot VERY well indeed. I have several heavy-barreled 24" to 26" A/R's with Krieger, Hart and Shilen barrels that all shoot in the 1/4 to 3/8 MOA range with no problem - but I bought an 18" chrome-lined thin contour Wylde-chambered Criterion barrel (which cost about half as much) for metal plinking and general use - and it will shoot 3/8 MOA with 50 grain Hornady V-Max bullets powered by IMR8208XBR. In short, I'd focus on getting a good barrel, free-float forend, trigger and scope. All other features have very minimal impact on accuracy as compared to the above. You could buy a DPMS Varmint model and have no problem hitting small 500 yard steel with a tuned load. If willing to spend 2K+, buy a Les Baer or equivalent custom gun. Or, spend half that for the DPMS and buy a better trigger which pulls at a much lower pull (I like about 1 1/2 pounds for my plinking and varmint rifles). The barrel could be upgraded IF you were unhappy with the performance - which would be unlikely if hitting 3/4 MOA were your goal.

I don't have any problem hitting 400/500/600/700 steel with my basic Mossberg MMR AR15s and my hand loads.

J&P Enterprsies has been the most accurate I've owned or seen. Shot for shot I out shot a custom bolt rifle one day playing around as we were shooting Tums at 300 yards.

Why limit yourself to "out of the box"? ARs are so easy to work on, and replace whatever, that it is simple. A few very basic tools, and you can do anything to them, have a very nice rifle, and save a bundle over the hi end units.

Good optics , solid mounts ,and good handloads with a Les Baer AR-15.
69 grain and 75 grain Match bullets out to 600 yards easily. 1moa
DPMS 24" 1-9 twist with a custom trigger does almost as well under 1,000$

Keystone Accuracy builds very accurate rifles call John he will build how you want or help you decide what will work for your needs

Les Baer. I don't know any other builders that will promise the accuracy that Baer does much less deliver on that promise.

I have a Bushmaster A2 configuration and all I did was put a Chip McCormick trigger in it and with my handloads of Varget and 69 Sierra MK it will shoot lights out.

I too can vouch for Les Baer. Mine was an 8 twist 18" bull barrel in .223. Incredible accuracy for a gas gun (any rifle, really), albeit very heavy. Also very forgiving, as it shot most everything well. I sold it to help finance this addictive accurate rifle hobby of mine - the one that it started, basically. Yeah, that rifle has cost me $10's of thousands by now!

I've been very impressed with my Les Baer Custom Super Varmint in 223 Rem. It is amazingly accurate; averaging in the low .3s for 5-shot groups at 100 yds. using factory-loaded Federal Match w/69 gr. SMKs.
