Mossberg bolt action 395 KA Barrel replacement???

My shooting Bud has the above Mossberg bolt action shotgun that he shortened the barrel on back in 1975. It's legal but he wants to put it back to a factory barrel length of the era. Say 1963 to 1985. My question is that the new barrel he bought, as is the old barrel, is threaded. Question is does the barrel need to be head-spaced to the action or do you just tighten it down to say 50 foot lbs., and call it a day. I can do Savage rifle barrel swaps but haven't a clue when it comes to bolt action shotguns and/ or Mossberg. Any guidance would be appreciated.

As an aside, I did tell him if we can't swap the barrel, at home, it probably wouldn't be worth taking to smith unless for sentimental reasons.

It looks like the barrel would need to be indexed for the extractor groove and headspace checked. It’s possible he lucks out and the barrel aligns properly when torqued. There’s only one way to find out and that’s to remove the old barrel and try the replacement.

I've been reading all kinds of shotgun forums even a Mossberg forum. I haven't joined to any ask questions, but I've searched engined them to death. Next to nothing on bolt shotguns and headspace. I guess I'll wing it per Jeff Buchanan's post above and see if I get lucky.
