Mossberg .223 MVP Barrel Nut Removal/Replacement

Bully

Silver $$ Contributor
My buddy has a Mossberg MVP in .223 and wants the barrel threaded for a brake. I'm wondering if anyone makes a replacement barrel nut for the rifle? I believe is .875 x 28 or 27 or some such. I can't seem to find a replacement and he's messed up the nut with a pipe wrench.

Thanks for any help.

Bully,

You have a lathe, make a nut for it. Get ya a piece of "stress proof" and make a new nut for it.
Bore it, Do your I.D. threading,(if needed) part it off, chuck up a dummy shaft, thread it, screw the nut on to it, and finish up the machining. Just got to keep everything parallel (true/flat/square)

I would really double check those barrel thread dimensions. I believe it is 1" X 20. Very close to Savage. Using that pipe wrench does kind of give meaning to gun plumber:rolleyes:

I have made a nut for myself once. I internal threaded it, and faced the rear of it true. tgen turned a sacrificial shouldered tennon screwed nut into that and turned outside to diameter and bored the recess at front.
Having said that,
WATCH EBAY!

This is the .223, not the 308. It's a mini action. I'll, of course, check everything once I get to his place to see it.

Have you tried calling Mossberg and see if they might sell you a new barrel nut?

I just read a post that said PTG sold a Mossberg barrel nut. Might be worth a call.

Mossberg is an odd duck . The 223 sized actions have smaller threads than the 1-20 found on the ATR and other 308 cartridge sizes . I think the magnums have a larger thread still but can not verify

He put calipers on the barrel. Looks like OD is 1”. So it may be 1x20. I will confirm when I have time to look at it.

Unless they changed it, MVP 223 is 7/8x28 class 2 on a 1.4" long tenon, barrel is 1" under the nut. I know this because I've made 3 barrels from contoured blanks. PTG makes a nut in CM or SS.

I believe the MVP 308 is the same as small shank Savage with a slightly different threaded length, but check, this may be wrong. People have claimed they used a Savage prefit.

Thank you!

BTW the Jard drop in trigger (for 4x4/MVP/Patriot) is pretty good for a varmint style setup. I definitely like the 12 oz.

The tricky part of this process is making a jig to locate the recoil lug properly during assembly, or do the machining to pin it ala Remmy, Sav etc. With the PTG nut you'll need to make a special tool like a 12 pt socket that fits well, cut off the drive end so the barrel can pass thru, weld a bar on the sides. Off the top of my head socket size is 27mm or 1 1/16.
