Mosin Rebarrel

So I missed the hay day of milsurp modding and $60 mosins. 14yr me just couldn't convince my dad to drop $1200 for crate of them and a kr98 sniper, what can you do :D Anyhow I picked up a bubba'ed chopped mosin a while ago and it's just been sitting around. Was gonna make it a cast bullet/paper patch shooter but was just curious if one wanted to Rebarrel one to make it half decent for hunting what would be a good way to go as far as barrels and what would I probably be looking at as far as smithing costs ?
It's something on the back burner right now but just wondering. Thanks as usual :)

If it were me, I'd leave it as is and shoot it as you originally planned. By the time you get a decent barrel and someone to install it, you would be well on your way towards a decent target (not ex battle) rifle. It would be much easier and somewhat cheaper to go the M98 route.

Hey, the Mosin has two features that are considered state of the art in todays actions.

First is the floating bolt head just like a Savage
Second is the locking luggs are in the horizontal when in battery, just like Bats Neuvo.

Of course, the rest of it is pretty much the bottom rung In the ladder of desired features.

I did read a humorous statement in a magazine, the writer stated that the Mosin was superior to the 98 KAR in one respect. It was longer and heavier so made a better club when you ran out of ammo.

They are good rifles and capable of superior accuracy if you build them right. Don't let anyone discourage you. The barrel is the heart of any rifle, Get a good barrel. Here is one I built in 2011 sitting next to My Sako TRG 42. That target on the left was shot out of the Mosin the day before a long range match. I have a couple of good wins with the rifle including a Gold Medal 2 years ago shooting against modern expensive rifles. I have rebuilt the rifle once since then including a much nicer bolt handle.

I've worked on hundreds of them and rebarreled dozens (two in right now). Get a stock from Richard's Microfit (or Boyd's but you'll need to open the barrel channel). I use McGowen for .311, but if you handload get a .308 groove barrel- there's only one match grade bullet in .311 (174 SMK).

The floating bolthead as mentioned above was way ahead of it's time. Receivers are bulletproof including the lug abutments- the bolt body itself serves as a safety lug on the right side- but I've never seen evidence of a single failure (unless you intentionally stuff a case with Bullseye, maybe). Conversions including 30-.06 are doable, but mag mods are the biggest challenge along with boltface/extractor and the receiver mounted ejector.

I have done them in these calibers:

7.62x53R .308 bore
30x54R Improved
6.5x53R Lapua or also known as Vostock
6.5 PRC
30-40 Krag Ackley Improved
7x65R

I bush the bolts and true the bolt heads and turn the firing pin down. Shorten and turn down the cocking peices. All of the 6.5 calibers will blow primers if you don't bush the bolt heads.

if you have to pay a 'smith, its gonna cost. on the other hand you can still shop around and look for a late('43) with little wear and a great bore. i have 4 as we speak. i have shot small groups with the sie 174 mk. if smithed simply go with a 308 to give a bigger bullet selection.
quality scope mounts are hard to find and not sure about the market on turned down bolts.
a 25" actually has more power than a 25" 308 in spite of lower pressure..the use of modern powders is amazing

The Vostock is on my to-do list... should give .260 performance, no?
I'm drooling over that M28/76 stock. I had a customer wanted to give me one (slightly damaged) to use on my duplicator- but I could never find a recoil pad large enough (length) to fit.

One more... this was a .44 Mag, (single shot, natch)

Yes It will out do the 260, I have a conservative load with RE22 and I'm getting over 2750 fps with a 140 eldm.

That stock is actually a TKIV-85 stock which I had to highly modify to make it work, But it came out nice. I also have a M28/76 stock on the 7x65R I am almost finished with. The M28/76 does not have the factory stippling and the cheek rest is slightly different. And the green stocked one is from a Tikka Master Sporter, very comfy to get behind. I prefer the stocks from Finland.

I have rebarreled mosins in:
single shots:
45/70
223
30-30

repeaters:
7.62x54r [barrel set back]
7mmRemMag
300WinMag
25 Krag Ackley
30-30
6.5 Vostok

For a pillar bedded mosin and Timney trigger, the pillar must be relieved.
For a longer shoulder cartridge, the feed lips must be relieved.
For a wider cartridge, the mag well must be relieved.
For a longer cartridge, an ejector over ride button is needed to extract unfired ammo from chamber.
When cutting the extractor relief cut on the breech, care must be taken to cut less than 180 degrees.

I was thinking…….”I just might want to build one of these"………But your pictures talked me out of it:)

seriously, is there any type of extractor that could be installed to allow the use of a flat barrel with a regular rimless case? Do you have a close up picture of just the bolt head.?

4 different mosin projects:
300WM
6.5 Vostok
25 krag ackley
223 bolt mod for extractor

I have made a few , usually just coned the breech , some big cartridges can be feed easily , magazine is the limiting factor . They can be fine shooters BUT.....
Having hundreds of mausers , there is no comparison.

So I missed the hay day of milsurp modding and $60 mosins. :)
Ya', you missed the real hayday, when you could go into about any hardware store, in any small town, and have your choice of Mausers priced from $12-$18 and Springfields for $20-$25. And, they weren't in a gun rack, they were in a wooden barrel. Take your choice! Cash and carry, no 'paperwork'........ Sound "cheap"? The dollar was worth something, then. 20 'bucks' as a fair amount of money.

Find a Finnish Nagant. The Finn out does several other milsurps including my 03 and 03A3, it almost equals a K31.
