Mosin Nagant @ Cabelas $120

Saw in the ad this week Cabelas had used surplus Mosin Nagants (91/30??) for $150. I was interested, so I went and looked at them. They were all the same, all round-no hex recievers. Nothing too rare I guess, but they were in really nice shape. I was going to buy one just to have around, but the guy told me they would go on sale this thursday (3/14) for $120! Thought I would share the info...

Not planning on doing a lot of shooting with it, but it will be a nice part of my little collection.

Cabela's had them on sale last spring for $79.99 , Guess they went up like everything else. Friend bought 3 of them and holds informal matches using them. The SER #'s are 5 apart for the 3 guns. Shoot fairly decent actually (for what they are) 1 3/4- 2' @ 100, about 4 1/2 @ 200 with the Russian ammo.

Here is my Mosin. This was for practice to see if I could do the work prior to a 6br project. (I am not a gunsmith or a machinist)

Bedded, blocked, jeweled bolt. Rifle $87 stock $85, everything else is bolt on and not part of the rifle. The hardest part was the scope mount, but I got it right after 5 tries. What is ironic is that you could see where the holes for an original scope mount had been welded and ground smooth. My son and grandson both love to shoot it.

i just picked up another 1943 with that looks like a new bbl...smooth sharp edged lands.

my toy of the bunch is cut to 24", bedded, reconfigured stock, 6-18 nikon, 3# huber trigger, recrowned, muzzle brake added( but not really needed), left hand m1d cheek pad as the scope/mount sits high.

load development work only so far, not returns to the range yet.
tested three bullets..150 fornady hunting, 168 smk(308) 174 smk (311)
lapua brass, wolf/tula large rifle primers, vv n135 powder, 100yds.
150 3 shots 0.365"
168 3 shots 0.516
174 3 shots 0.257.....yep 1/4" from a $100 70 year old rifle...
see if i can find some pic's...

six groups on this target. 5 done at 100yds
data on the target
group 1 is the only 5 shot group...still dialing in at 100..it was 3 while adjusting then 2 .
group 2 on the bottom center is small group for this load
to the right of group 2 is another small group...but it was shot at 25yds while zeroing scope....

My m28/76 (granted not $120) is sub moa rifle with diopter. That is the ONLY vintage military firearm that can give a run for the money to my CG-63, CG-80 and FSR swedes (6.5x55). My PU sniper is actually getting better with additional shooting, as I just broke 2MOA barrier with it last Thursday (100m bench, magazine rest). My SVT-40 Sniper (yes, the real deal with real scope mount) is 1.5MOA with cheap ammo, however, if I do not let her cool - starts stringing to 2o'clock pretty badly.
However, nothing shot 7.62x54 better than my former dragunov (it was Tiger converted to mil-spec) - most accurate semi-auto rig I have EVER shot - it was 1/2MOA rifle - the only reason I sold it last summer is that I got an opportunity to get a VERY rare M41B unfired Swedish sniper so I needed $$ to fund that.

Some of these (regular m91/30) will come with a counterbore and some are not - in my experience with 4 (from local FleetFarm http://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/century-arms-mosin-nagant-91-30/0000000066925 ) - Counterbored shot BETTER once Cosmo was cleaned out.... Also, PB Blaster is GREAT for removing Cosmo and getting her all cleaned up (made a chamber out of 6" PVC that is filled with PB Blaster) - just do NOT leave your barreled action there for more than a day or two as it will start removing blue. Naturally, you would not soak stock in it either....

One of these days I should put up a pic of the M-44 I use for long range shooting.
A few years back me and a friend went in on a case of them and split them up with folks we know - properly.
I think they were in the order of $65.00 each that we sold them for to get a few free ones. 4473's were filled out.

I kept one of the ratty looking ones, removed the butt plate and welded a 1/4 - 20 stud to it.
Sometimes, when I go to the range I bring it, flip the bayonet out, jam it in the ground and mount my spotting scope to it 8)

But seriously, my SVT40 and my 91/30 sniper really do pretty well for what they are.
All rifles are fun.

you are one sick puppy.....
spotting scope stand.......
there are russian solders rolling over in thier graves....

i have a new unissed 44..think i will pass on your mod...

I guess I am just missing something. Guns are tools and I don't go all weepy over my hammers. :'(

Only a fool would use a stiller action and kreiger barrel for his first project, and my daddy didn't raise a fool. If I had screwed up my first ever gun project how much money would I have lost? $87 Those same people would probably ridicule you for naming you guns (all of mine have names), but they probably name their body parts instead.

BTW my rifles are named..
458 SOCOM "Fat Man"
5.56 "Little Boy"
Mosin "Sergei"
Muzzleloader "Old Fart"

the only tool i own that has a name is a very large hammer. BMFH

i do not name tools nor guns....

but mn's make great project guns....

but boats planes and cars are means of transport, very tempeimental. and lots of maintenence...like women..so are named after women....

guns just do not fit in that catagory.....and if yours are..replace them...tools should not be high maintenence...

I have had a couple Russian Mosin 91-30's that shot well, but not as well as my Finnish Mosin M28-30 that was built by Sako for the Civil Guard. These were basicly a parts gun re-arsenaled from left behind Russian rifles from the revolution, new barrels, sights, stocks shortened, and a honed trigger. Balance is the best for off hand shooting. I take it to the yearly local turkey shoot and always get my limit plus get "whats that old gun" lots of fun. I have a PSL with a Russian 8x that shoots the same surplus corrosive 147gr. but not near as much fun as the Finnish Mosin-Nagant!

i have a stack of 91/30's, one is a sniper, a 44 polish, a 91/59, a finn 39 and a finn 28/30...use to have more but thinned them out last yr.

FUN AND cheap caliber to shoot, too bad I had to sell my Dragunov (militarized Tigr), but I needed the $$ to buy minty and matching m41b swedish sniper rifle for my collection....
