Since publishing my book, “The Art of Predator Calling: A Portrait in Tradition,” in 2022, it has proven to be a tremendous success nation wide. The earliest information regarding my own engagement in the art of calling refers to October 17, 1965, thus the info and data covers a span of 57 years using a call for photography and hunting. When the book was completed, I was literally exhausted just looking at the imagery and remembering the energy and knowledge required in collecting these files in all weather conditions, as well as the volumes of data to develop the charts and graphs to accompany some 20,000 words of text.
Understandably, I stepped away from photographing these fascinating predators for some time just from sheer exhaustion in my unrelenting goal of collecting and offering the best imagery to accomplish my publishing effort, but a couple of days ago I picked up my trusty Canon EOS 1DX II and Canon 100-400mm lens and took to one of my favorite places to call. After 3 hours in the field and as the sun cast its last rays over the rugged landscape, I was very pleased to begin my drive home with many great new images to add to my folder.
One of those images is included here, a defining example of the quality I hope for once in the field with these interesting carnivores! Indeed, it was so great to share time with the wild ones on that glorious afternoon. Hope you enjoy!

Hey butch is the best way to get a copy of his book on his website? Thank you for the information.

I bought two copies of Wyman's latest book.. One for me and another for a friend.

I hunted and killed quite a number of coyotes over the years, I'm 70 now. A couple of years ago something inside changed and I no longer have any desire to kill them. Quite the contrary, in fact. One of Gods more enjoyable creatures, I love to hear and see them. Risking ridicule, I believe they know that I mean them no harm now, at least the ones around my house. If they give me a reason to thin them a little I will..

Excellent ''trophy'' Wyman !

Get some sheep and chickens.
That will change your mind about them right quick!
In all seriousness, I do love them, as well as the timberwolves that are in our area.
I just wish coexistence was easier, and less costly.

I know you are absolutely correct.. I have cattle and have lost a few calves that I know of over the years. If I knew the true number lost I may be appalled and go on a killing spree !

You are correct. JPB3 will take care of them if they bother his cows and calves. Wyman's oldest Son has a very large herd of sheep. He is having a little problem. Wyman and Pate are seeing to it.

Well heck Butch, looks like that big rain chance slipped by us again. Dang it!
Those damn meteorologists are about as accurate as a dog pissing on a post!
Rick and I went out last night to check on Pate’s sheep herd. Coyotes have killed several over the last two nights but last night we just got glimpses of coyotes far out in wheat fields going the other direction. We had Pate’s 22-250 with one of those 6,000.00 night scopes on it. I guess I’m too traditional but that stuff is just not my bag. The rifle is a custom built HUGE thing with a big barrel, suppressor and a really cumbersome scope. Just to get it in place over the pickup hood is a chore. And too, I don’t like staying up late. Heck, I did that enough back in the 60’s when a fellow and I would hunt all night long. I haven’t hunted at night in 40 years and don’t have an interest in starting it again. I like to watch coyotes come to a call in the daytime and then go to bed at night!!
I’ll load Pate up some 22-250 ammo as he has both a day rifle and night rifle. He has been checking his sheep in the early mornings and actually ran down 5 coyotes with his pickup and shot them while driving with his shotgun. I asked him what shotgun and he said it was his 20 gauge!! I laughed and told him to place an order from his dealer buddy and get a 3 inch Magnum semiautomatic 12 gauge! I have several boxes of 3 inch Magnum BB shot I will give him but warned that he was in for some recoil! He said he didn’t care so will be interesting to see how he likes that gun. He has it ordered now.
Back in the 1960’s the owner of the ranch my dad worked for would come in from Houston and hire my brother and me to kill quail, duck and geese for him to take back. He furnished cases of shells, shotguns and the 1966 Bronco U13 Roadster that I ended up owning in 1968.
Man did we had a great time hunting on that 27,000 acre ranch and getting paid to do it! But those shotguns with 3 inch magnum loads while shooting duck and geese beat the hell out of us! I’m not a fan of recoil anymore so I steer clear of heavy recoil guns nowadays. My .280 Ackley is about max for me!
Well, I’d better feed the cats and get some breakfast. You and Charlotte have a great day!
BTW… I talked to my oldest son about he and I flying to Terrell on March 15 for that trade day. He is going to try and make that happen! The flight would be a short one as he might fly us in his Bonanza. It cruises at 200 plus MPH! I’ve never piloted one, preferring high wing planes during my tenure of flying. Nowdays I just enjoy taking Pates KitFox up and cruising around locally at 75 mph and looking the country over while doing an occasional landing in wheat fields and on dirt roads for practice.
Y’all have a great day!
Wyman
